[personal profile] shallowness
Watched the first episode of An Honourable Woman last night (I have no idea how long it runs). Am I making too much of a thing of BBC2 deliberately having put it on in the same slot at The Good Wife, which was, after all, on another channel, is not quite the same thing, although surely there'll be some overlap in viewers? It's all very mysterious and arty (juxtapositions of billowing curtains, characters doing the same things/saying the same things) punctured with violence and its after-effects, which is not surprising as it continually references the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is the Honourable Woman of the title, Nessa Stein (more or less getting away with a posh English accent among British actors and clearly loving getting to play a character who gets to make good speeches as well as playing quieter, more enigmatic and emotional moments). And I could give you a recap of what happened, but the point is that we don't know much at all. There are lots of Secrets hinted at. To wit, I really don't know what to make of the nanny of Nessa's brother Ephra (Andrew Buchan)'s children. She could concievably be Nessa or Ephra's lover or a psychic spymaster. Probably not the psychic part. Anyway, she's mysterious and she's not the only one.

It did end with the Hot Bodyguard (that guy with that face! Who was wearing a tux and you knew the actor was thinking 'this is the closest I'll get to being James Bond so I'm going to make the most of it') and Nessa's wee nephew was kidnapped. I did not approve of either of those two things, personally.

I'm a bit torn on this, it's weighty with quality and import, and I will probably wait it out a few epiosdes to decide if I entirely agree that it is really a quality show. I mean, I like that stuff like this is getting made, but I am not always sure it's as good as everyone makes it out to be.

Radiohead seemed like a really heavy-handed music choice at one point.
