AKA the season 2 Christmas episode
I enjoyed this a lot: I got to side with Danny a lot and I was amused. They got rid of Jeremy’s fake belly and the addicted-to-food thing was quite amusing, although I do hope it’ll gradually be dropped. But I am as happy as Betsey at the return of his former figure. His bromance/supportive/pre-slash relationship with the New Doc really downgraded Morgan’s screen time, although I was amused by how much Morgan wasn’t the Coolest Guy at the Party for stage 1 of Mindy’s scenario.
I kept thinking of Community’s parody of Santa Baby, if that’s not too Evil Midwife. Although my response to him is ‘despite the awesome coat, you had a thing with this right-on reptile, MINDY’.
Best thing of the episode? Obviously Danny busting his moves. (Also, in hindsight, MEANINGFUL song choice.) But I was in a gurgle of delight at that. That goes on the list of excellent fictional presents, because it was thoughtful, requiring effort and totally something she loves. The memory of that is miles better than gauze and a stapler, and I say this as a fan of practical presents. Plus, dancing is mostly joyous so watching someone do something joyous (for you) is such a positive, nice thing.
Anyway, Mindy was crazy like a romcom-influenced sitcom character throughout, except when the underlying sadness broke through. Well, someone who would pettily attack the better Christmas tree would barely baulk at holding a workplace party as a mantrap for someone who was dating someone else. Rumpled Cliff on the subway was easy on the eye, although he really has no idea of the depths of the crazy going on.
But the heart was Mindy/Danny and the almost kissing moment and how they were around each other. Regarding how he chose to react when she suggested they got a breath of fresh air, in fairness, I think his gingerbread piece de resistance meant more to him than the booze bra did to Mindy, and maybe he wanted to regroup and think after nearly kissing her, so I wasn’t all that sad for him as he sadly looked down at the kissing couple from the sad window of Christmas woe.
