So, the big questions don’t include who’s going to go, because it’s highly likely that it’ll be Sunetra. It’s who’s going to be in the dance-off with her, especially after Craig went for such low scores, and is this around the world business going to come back next year? I think that the fact that Bruno spoke all those languages might be in the con side for some. But, for me, it could have been worse...

Deeply unsurprising that they went for an Indian theme to open, and that Karen got a starring role as that famous Indian Nicole Scherzinger (props to Aljiaz for being himself and Iveta and Janette for the head isolations.) I will just say again: Japanese paso doble.

Everyone had extra dancers, which mostly worked better than in Blackpool, I thought. We must be getting to the point where they’ll be doing two dances soon, so there’ll be even less time for polish, just as the pressure on the judges to hoik the scores up (hi, Len) becomes immense.

Costumes: ha, ha, Trent. I thought Frankie did the worst out of the ladies, mainly because of the wig and headband, while most of the rest of them didn’t really look as if they were wearing anything extra apart from Karen’s feathers. Pixie’s hair was cute and the skirt effect as she twirled nullified the costumey tendencies. I wondered how long Pasha’s fez would stay on.

I really enjoyed Pixie and Trent’s opening routin. She was so graceful and it became less a concept than a story. I was interested how all the balletic touches would fly with Darcy, particularly, because how long did Pixie have ballet lessons for anyway?

I was hoping that Claudia would wear headgear for all the dances – there were two potential feather showgirl/salsa thingies, for starters. She continues to be brilliant. Again, Tess, not so much.

Mark (zip it, Mark, it’s a dancing reality show, not A Conversation With You...and stop encouraging him, Tess) did some excellent lifts and the rest of it was so-so, possibly underrehearsed. At this point in the series is not the time to have a timecrunch. Len’s overmarking balanced out Craig.

Sunetra’s rumba was better than I feared it’d be. I thought she acted it more than danced it, but it was a nifty spin, avoided Brendan’s usual battle with Bruno, and deserved better than a five.

Caroline’s Charleston was so spiffy. I thought it suited her precision, but allowed her to be a wee bit more elegant than the jive. She looked like she was having massive fun and it was infectious. Also, SHE BETTERED SIMON’S 3 10s because Craig gave her a nine. If the show didn’t make such a thing of these supposed scoring milestones, I wouldn’t mind so much when they got it wrong (eg the first time Craig was meant to have given a 9 out this year. I get that the show tries to manipulate the viewers a little, but stop trying to wipe out stuff we know we saw!)

Simon has so come into his own. While I wasn’t entirely drawn in – partly because I’m not that invested in him and Kristina? – I can definitely see that he’s reaching his potential. I thought Kristina started rambling some nonsense about slow dances.

I was impressed by the content and speed of Frankie’s jive, and, of course, the dancing on a surfboard in heels bit. But by being a bit too frenetic, she didn’t get a 10 and seemed second class because of it. Still, four couples rose to the top this week and she was in one of them.

The Greek Argentine tango was interesting in and of itself (and I thought Janette’s choreography and approach to the fusion was clever), but with Simon having really thrown the male gauntlet down, it was going to be interesting to see how Jake responded, because it’s becoming obvious that the early male frontrunner is a more limited dancer, although he’s always been a better performer. I didn’t see the incident that upset Craig so much, but I did see – like Tess – the near crash. So, it’ll be interesting to see if the audience rescues Jake now that he’s really in danger or prefers Mark and his storyline. Of course, the twist could be that we save Sunetra (I was totally thinking what if we’d had a rumba from Judy and Anton this year.) I say we, I, again, voted for Pixie and Trent.

Atlantis 2.03 Telemon

Fine, but about as complex as cardboard. Telemon looks too much like last year’s suitor (only he reminded me of a younger version of Cary Elwes’s character in Ella Enchanted). I think Ariadne made a bad decision as a queen because they made it all about her feelings. She didn’t need to accept the first prince who came a-calling, and certainly not one who came a-calling with no retinue. Sure, ask for Dion’s advice, but also ask for the Oracle’s.

But then she was busy trying not to make puppy-eyes at Jason and vice vera.

More interesting that Pythagoras now knows about Pasiphae too – Addy did his best with little material. I have to admit that if Pythagoras was a girl, I’d be shipping Pythagoras/Jason by this point.

I thought that the fighting in the amphitheatre was better shot and choreographed than in the past. I also really liked the idea of Jason as Atlantis’s champion and how expressive he was for the crowd compared with the more internalised turmoil (even if Jason/Ariadne is boy-girl stuff I can’t get excited about.)

And after that, I posted fic: got my sights set on you (MCU, Darcy/Clint, 238 words). That ficlet is the first MCU thing I’ve posted.
