I caught up on Agents of Shield (when I could have been watching Miranda live, actually).

2.10 What They Become

The whole bit explaining why mechanical devices were necessary to destroy the city between Tripp and one of the brothers was probably the limpest part of the episode, because although a lot of characters made stupid decisions, you could understand why.

I mainly loved the ladies’ part in all this, from everyone bar me and Melinda doubting her ability to do some fancy flying, which she totally discounted as being a valuable thing that she did in her rush to blame herself for other people’s decisions.

The scenes between Skye and her crazy biological father mostly worked. I’d been spoiled about a Daisy being introduced and figured out it was Skye’s given name since the last episode. But I am certainly in support of her making her own choices, although they did lead to her destiny. The OTTness of the character Maclachlan’s created just about worked (there’s been some fine-tuning since Paxton’s scenery chewing turn or he is better at working at that pitch) and the fact that he didn’t answer anything like enough questions – what was her mother’s name? Surely if he loved her and built a family with her he’d want to tell his daughter that!? – meant that there was unfinished business. But I hooted with pleasure that Skye’s father figure took away the killing of Whitehall from her birth father. I mean, there’s also the fact that Phil’s an agent of SHIELD and Pa blames them for the worst day of his life too and Phil made Skye an agent, but that’s less important than the familial dynamics.

I was certainly in full support of Skye’s attitude towards Ward – Rayna put his plan of getting her to love whatever he thinks he is again well, with added scorn that he thinks it’ll work – and for taking him down. Of course, she underestimated Rayna again and her attempt at restitution for not killing her father (or considering there was a third way between killing him and letting him go, such as disabling him and letting him face some justice for the killing) was stupid but it was emotional, decently conveyed by Bennett and she didn’t have May around to give her the O RLY face, so fine. And now Skye’s transformed, Tripp is dead (I’m a little sad because he could be charming, but they haven’t known what to do with him) and I’m not sure about Rayna. I don’t want to lose Rayna. I’ve felt that she’s a good counter-balance to Skye of late, not to mention how she works with others.

Phil was also making a stupid decision in going down, but at least he acknowledged it to Mama Bear May. And she had to take the order and the responsibility, and she did, because she’s a grown-up and a pro.

I did snicker at some of Ward and Hunter’s lines. Palicki put a lot of heft into Bobbi’s reaction to what had happened to Mac. (I’d have been happier if he went rather than Tripp, tbh. He’d better have learned from this alien encounter.)

Also, some more Fitzsimmons tension. (If Jemma ends up wanting it, fine. But she’s not there yet. I wonder if the show will commit to her grief over Tripp enough.) Simmons was adorable in making all her biological analogies and not falling into illogical despair.

Oh, brainwashed Agent with May’s face, with Whitehall gone, your priorities should be to survive and not to listen to Ward of all people. So sad that she did that for her. So pleased for Ming-Na Wen as an actress.

A fairly effective end to this block with some big questions to be answered by the rest of the season.

I’m not there yet, but if I were to get an icon for this show, what I’d like would be one with the faces of Skye, Melinda, Jemma and Bobbi on it, as they’re the characters I’m most interested in.

Among a kajillion other shows, Revenge is coming back soon. From the trailer I saw, it looks as ludicrous as ever and a little extra. (I would like to see how they explain that enormously daft twist regarding David Clarke at the end of the last season, and I would also like there to be no Emily-Jack-Nolan stuff to draw me back in so that I could walk away.)
