shallowness: Margaret Hale of North and South adaptation sitting at desk writing (Margaret North and South writing)

Den of Geek had a feature about Wolf Hall and the controversy about its biases from historians. This passed over my head. I was grateful for the spoilers/reminders of what happened to Henry's next wives. Also, apparently it was mightily successful for BBC 2, which I'm glad about, because I can't imagine it was done on the cheap.

I went to see The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel last night (it is just about what you’d expect it to be, which was just right for me last night, and Smith, Dench and Strathairn, in particular, have a couple of excellent scenes). But before that there were THREE trailers featuring Matthias Schoenarts, seeming to suggest that he’s the go-to romantic lead for period dramas these days, especially if they’re adaptations featuring Oscar-nominated/winning actresses. I am not sure whether he should high-five his agent or not, or whether he should rage about the timing of the releases or not.

Of the three, Suite Française has been on my radar the longest, and I probably will go to see it (although it will basically be competing with Resistance for me, and will probably have less resonance). I am not going to see Far From the Madding Crowd if I can help it, because what little I know of Hardy’s books enrage me. I hadn’t heard of A Little Chaos before, but it’s directed by Alan Rickman and features him, so why not? The actresses in all three are: Michelle Williams, supported by Kirsten Scott-Thomas and others, Cary Mulligan, and Kate Winslet, respectively. Schoenarts first came to my attention playing opposite Marion Cotillard in Rust and Bone. I’ll be interested to see if he can do the accents. Also the hair in A Little Chaos is preposterous. That is not a bad thing.

If you're interested [personal profile] selenak was doing reviews of Wolf Hall that included details changed and left out to make Cromwell look good, and More and Anne especially look bad. Should still be on the first page of her DW.
