So, apparently, five are taking a break from airing season 3 of Person of Interest. I don’t know why we need a midseason break when we’re a season and a half behind the US...but I’m not a scheduler.
I watched Agents of SHIELD live, which means I didn’t type up reactions during the ad breaks.
2.20 Scars
I am still digging the tussle of families for Skye. It was understated, but May’s pseudo-maternal feelings make me really want her to come face to face with Jiaying, and for Coulson-Cal not to have all the focus. The other big thing was that this is the episode after Age of Ultron went down. I wasn’t entirely convinced that all the characters would know what they knew – especially in Afterlife. I wouldn’t say the join was flawless. I’m left wondering what Fury is officially doing now.
All this business with the Inhumans and indexing basically feels like X-men’s mutants facing the Mutant Registration Act to me. (Possibly this came firs in comics.) Although I had hopes that Jiaying would be wise enough to see that a war wasn’t the best of ideas, she had a lot of my sympathy, because although bad people with powers is scary, who made Reconstituted SHIELD the ones in charge of indexing them? That would be SHIELD that was infiltrated by HYDRA, who definitely didn’t have the best motives. SHIELD who is answerable to no-one without, and the brain trust supporting Director Coulson didn’t cover itself in glory here. I mean I was glad that what was in the box was harmless, but Gonzales was a terrible choice to go meet Jiaying (objective, my foot) and deserved her scorn, although not to be killed AND framed. I like that they’re keeping the edge to her – I LOVED that Gordon was not swayed from decades of loyalty by Rayna’s moves, although maybe Rayna was acting from better motives that we thought, she was using her old methods. And yikes, Cal isn’t the most reliable source for much.
On the other side, SHIELD. SHIELD that can’t see it automatically heightens everything by drawing the line ‘on our side/not on our side’ and ‘We’re right’. Simmons, Mac and Gonzales are the most extreme examples of that, but angry!May and Coulson are there too, and their almost!daughter is the one with a foot on both sides of this line and a torn heart.
But I vastly enjoyed all the Coulson/May tension. He did make it personal. So, when it’s a question of trust and secrets, it isn’t just a matter of the Director and an Agent with Phil and Melinda. I hope that, after the season ends, I will find a long May/Coulson fic that gets to grips with their relationship/several fics and that I’ll still be of a mind to read it, depending on what happens next.
Bobbi and Hunter pointedly didn’t deal with their issues. I didn’t quite track what Ward and Cara (oh dear) wanted with Bobbi – do they realise what she’ll do to them given half the chance? Although the Original Team have dibs on Ward, and Bobbi wasn’t the guiltiest at SHIELD of messing with Cara.
At least Jemma admitted what she’d done to Fitz. Now if someone could explain to her that what Ward does next is ON WARD not her, I would be ever so grateful. Obviously, someone from SHIELD pointing out that she’s taking a little too much on her shoulders would be bitterly funny, but still.
I don’t care if Mac and his unhelpful alien attitude goes, although I suppose Fitz deserves a goodbye scene.
I’m sure I’ve forgotten something, but it was certainly involving, if more on a character level than their overall aims.
