4.21 Bus Tour

Tightly written daftness. Ben and Leslie segued nicely from being So In Love to campaign manager trying to handle his candidate’s wilder ideas (and back again). I grinned as I realised that Andy’s ridiculous Burt Macklin schtick was going to lead to him putting pie to Gerry’s face. The campaign bus reversing into the giant picture of Dead Mr Newport was equally predictable (maybe a little less funny, although it was surrounded by more frenetic business, perhaps because it was).

Some things about money came up, I was starting to wonder how deep Ron’s pockets were until I remembered the music career. Also, it is very satisfying that Jennifer hasn’t been paid, and isn’t likely to, because the Newports are the Newports.

Yay, Ann! for standing up to Leslie.

4.22 Win, Lose or Draw

Well, the use of voting machines and other electoral shenanigans got it in the neck.

And that arrangement for an exact tie? SO PAWNEE in its wrongness.

Poor Ann, still having to deal with Tom and Chris’s romance issues.

No need to worry about Ms Barkley. Ooh, they’re going for Ben’s career now pulling them apart.

Lots of genuinely heart-warming moments, too many to capture, but Ben and Ron’s conversation, of all things; Leslie going to the chamber; her realising she’d been selfish over Ben’s job; finding out she’d won; finding out Ben had never written a concession speech; free-styling the end of the speech.

So, we end with Leslie now a councilwoman, but Ron in charge of most of the Parks and Rec crew, Ben commuting and April determined to make Andy a cop (not sure if that last’s a good idea). The ending was perfect, though, bagging on Gerry, who had failed to vote with the best of intentions! I think they’ve gone a better job of showing Gerry fails this season, making everyone’s treatment of him a bit more understandable and less like bullying. There are other things that haven’t worked so well (usually in terms of being funny), but the trajectory of Leslie’s campaign and that Leslie/Ben are solid have delighted me. It was probably never going to have the giddiness of connecting with the show that season 3 had.

I’m presuming that Dave will carry on showing the next season without any break. If they don't, I hope I won't miss the return date.
