I missed Strictly - hope to catch up this afternoon - and so caught up on Nashville instead.
Nashville 3.19 The Storm Has Just Begun
Juliette has little justification for being miffed that Avery invited his mother to help him look after Cadence without really discussing it with her, but are either of them going to notice Juliette’s coldness towards her baby?
I like Not!Christina Aguilera’s new dark hair much less than the pinky colour, although the switch makes sense if she’s trying to go country.
Light relief was going to come from Scarlett being difficult over co-operating with Gunnar to find a new Avery (although nobody short of Avery could deal with her and Gunnar, I think)...and I thought Teddy would probably be arrested at his big do, but then Deacon got the transplant news.
And while those girls are charming, I do feel the need to cry nepotism over Maddie and Daphne getting to play happy family on another high-profile stage. However, I loved that Teddy recognised Daphne’s need to be the one in the sun, and I loved how she killed it, because Maddie’s had all the attention.
Meanwhile, Gunnar now knows about Deacon and some of why Scarlett has been the way she’s been. We got some of the inevitable tension between her and her hot doctor, surmounted for now.
I was enjoying Jade and Layla bonding both in and of itself and because Jeff disapproved (Layla being confident enough to be dismissive of his views in front of him and to others came off as really couple-y) and then because it put Will out. But – although I thought Avery’s mother was very wise and right to urge him to work on things with Juliette instead of passively-aggressively being a martyr and her delight at seeing him was adorable – Juliette had topped her usual divadom with being really bitchy to Layla and Jade, and for Jade to support Layla/beat Juliette in such a way was great. (Although I think there was just enough about Jade’s interaction with Layla to make us wonder if Jeff was right about the manipulation).
Bucky didn’t really react to being in a position where he was bidding against an artist on his own label... [YOU NEED TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO BUCKY’S REACTIONS GIVEN WHERE I THINK YOU’RE GOING, SHOW.]
It was a shame we didn't actually get to see Layla perform - Juliette, Avery, Glenn and Luke wouldn't have seen her in her new incarnation before, and although she and Will are in a more civil place, the song might well have been about him.
Anyway, Avery was right to tell Juliette off for the last verbal bitchslap to Jade and they’ve started to talk things through, but there’s so much going on with her. I bet she won’t apologise to Jade unless if Rayna makes her.
Poor hot doctor, he’s been cast as Teddy to Gunnar’s Deacon – I’m more worried about the journey than the destination with Scarlett/Gunnar.
I liked how they gave everyone their wobbly moment over Deacon.
Poor Daphne. I don’t think she’s going to be able to stay with her only daddy when he’s in jail.
Of course Jade won over the Bluebird, but every time she mentioned her youthful crush on Luke, I thought he should be feeling his age, not gearing up to score (it’s still a rebound though.)
But speaking of another couple with an age disparity, uber-confident Layla recognising that a hurt Jeff cares for her and going for it made me less grr about them. Even if that’s her totally stepping over the line she so recently drew.
In real life, Deacon would be right about not being able to promise Maddie (about whom I borderline wondered if she should have been at the hospital) he’d survive, but I really don’t see the show writing him off.
It was a mostly involving episode - I nearly watched the next straight after, but then decided to let this settle.
