shallowness: Fred and Ginger dancing in foregroud, him in tails, her in a dark gown, background a white circle (moon or spotlight) (Fred and Ginger dancing)
[personal profile] shallowness
Saturday

Outfitwise, we had TessnClaud in navy and black, Claudia going for a snazzy trouser suit and Tess going for an asymmetric mess. Navy wins. Tess might want to consider burning what she wore. Meanwhile, I think wardrobe was sending a message after last week’s costume extravaganza, as most people (by which I mean ladies) were in neutrals or muted colours, so a flash of pink lippy with silver fringing (Jamelia) or a rubber-duck inspired fringe thing (Karen) stood out. (So did Kirsty’s skirt, but not in a good way.) I thought the black thing on Carol’s head was unfortunate and ditto Giovanni’s wings, rightly mocked by the other pros.

Anyway, I thought Anita did a pretty good job with the difficult samba, but what with performing first and with other people doing well, they needed Gleb to play up to the camera and upstage Claudia’s planned Terms and Conditions business. Hey, I only realised this moment that they’ve removed Tess’s Joke As She Introduced The Judges. I applaud them for that. Now, if we could excise more of her trying to make jokes, because the snack business after the hilarity in the Clauditorium was painful.

Ditto many of the VTs. Apart from putting Jeremy in the pool, possibly Carol seeing flamenco dancers and visitors cheering on the celebs, most of them were gruesome. They should give the pros bonuses for pretending any of this is their idea.

Back to the dancing – this probably isn’t in the performing order.

Daniel is droll, but he does need to be more expressive when dancing. Kirsty and Brendan and their excuses are getting tiresome. Her paso was lacking. For instance, every time she bent down to pick up her skirt, it never seemed to go anywhere. I thought Georgia’s quickstep improved the more she danced. At this point, I had noticed that Craig’s comments were relatively nice, although a little after, I noticed that that might partly be because Bruno was being mean.

I can’t disagree with the judges’ comments about Kellie’s foxtrot – it drew me in and created a charming mood. She screamed again at the deserved marks. It was nice to know that I can be swayed and won over by The Dancing of couples I'm not fussed about. That and Jamelia’s Charleston were my favourite dances of the night. The Charleston really was Jamelia’s best dance and suited her, she threw herself at the cheeky bits, but also managed to be stylish – finally becoming the dancer she’s always thought she was. I hope she can build on this.

[Very important sidebar: Claudia should apologise. Gizmo is a Mogwai. It’s not his fault about the Gremlins.]

Carol’s paso was also her best dance, and I liked her (attempted) attitude and dynamism – in fact, I enjoyed the routine more than Kirsty’s although that was in part because I was snickering over Pasha’s posturing. She deserved to be told there was an improvement, even if no-one will be calling it fantastic. Jeremy’s jive was part of the bubbling hysteria of the night. He does go for it, fair play. Ainsley’s waltz had a lot of charm and the judges spotted less mistakes.

Oh Jay. I wish they hadn’t made such a big deal of the 10 and last week’s jive, although it’s understandable that they did. Of course, we all had expectations (Aliona has form on amazing quicksteps and Jay is an exciting dancer), and once they started dancing, it started well, but then...the mistakes were too obvious, although there were glimpses of how brilliant a dancer he is. A bit gutting all round. I wondered if he was under-rehearsed, but Aliona’s comments about the dress rehearsal (and how it was the opposite last Saturday) suggest not and it may be nerves. Possibly she needs to dial down the content next week, although Giovanni and Anton's work may not allow that; however, Jay’s confidence is going to need to be built back up.

I know nearly everyone else improved or maintained their standard, but, erm, I did phone for them, because he’s definitely my favourite and capable of brilliance. Although I suspect if he’d been in the dance-off and danced it properly, there’s no way he’d have gone home, presuming none of the top five were also in the bottom.

There were a few things about Helen’s salsa (which was all about showing off her legs) that didn’t quite work for me, at times I thought she was a little too wild, but still good. Peter’s dramatic tango was very dramatic and what we’d expect – as pointed out on ITT, it’ll be interesting to see him do a softer ballroom – and I got excited by the TABLE DANCING. But I'd have marked them a little less highly than 32.

There was nothing wrong with Katie’s dancing, although I wasn’t expecting a 9 (to break the deadlock at the top!) until we heard the comments, but then I wouldn’t know about the content. Also, frankly, I spent most of the dance thinking ‘This is SUCH a weird song choice for a Viennese Waltz that’s about twirling beautifully under a chandelier apart from the tempo’.)

I am mortified that I cracked and phoned so early. I will see how I feel next week, but maybe I should sort out the online voting.

Proptastic pro dance – but the choreographer wasn't a Brit. How did he know Britain loved snooker in the eighties? I note that Anton (and Brendan) were doing something entirely different to the rest of the ‘boys’. I think Wild Boys vs Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was a better idea than reality, especially musically, although it allowed the two groups their moments.

I almost wish Claudia had remained in that cozzie for the rest of the episode.

There needs to be an Inside Out fanvid to that Will Young song. Obvious though it is. Anyway, I really loved the set dressing, enjoyed the pros’ dance and cheered Mr Young as he inserted himself into it. Will any other visiting singers follow suit? I wondered if the dancers hated the balloons, though.

I’d been concentrating so much on the joint seconds and top of the board that I had no idea who was likely to go. I mean, I thought Jay would be safe but that they’d torture him. They also tortured Jamelia, making me feel for her. Clever ‘in no particular order’ing as it came down to the two pasos, and I felt that Carol (like lowest scorer Jeremy) had done enough to deserve to be saved.

In fact, in hindsight, I agree with the bottom two – Daniel hadn’t improved and Kirsty loves her excuses. I also agree with the results – I could see Daniel had gone wrong. At first, I thought he was trying to go for it more, but I think the occasion did him in. Kirsty did some bits better and some of her moves made more sense this time around (I can’t wait for someone to do a paso I really enjoy!)
