Halloween
The opening dance was so crazily stylised that it was a good one to bring in the celebs – I noted that Helen and Jay got good spots – I laughed at Craig turning up.
I think Anita and Pasha won the costuming, overall, but making the judges the Addams family was genius. I only wish Len had got a drawn on moustache. Claudia as Tess’s cat was also aces, especially when I saw the tail.
Anton’s former dance partners’ visitation was legitimately funny (I love Judy Murray, but her delivery of her lines was so bad, it came off as creepy) although it was diluted by their having used the three men standing turning into ghosts already. Anyway, the trail made me think Katie Derham looked like Morena Baccarin, which I thought even more when they gave her a dark wig for the dance. I dunno. I thought there was some nice shaping in the paso, but there was definitely something off about it, so it didn’t deserve a standing O (or, I thought, quite the barrage of criticism. Are the judges reacting to having overmarked their VW?) Sound should have turned her mike off as she was panting during the judging.
Yeah, Kirsty obviously went wrong and then it was all a bit weird. Cue the excuses, AGAIN.
Jeremy turning into a zombie – right after Kirsty turning into a vampire? Buck up your ideas, show. I have to agree with the judges that their dance was entertaining – he’s put the work in and the Thriller referencing worked – but not so very much a salsa. I enjoyed watching Jeremy and Karen’s response to Craig’s four and learning that they were top of the leaderboard.
Worth noting that at this point people starting yanking Claudia’s tail.
Anita’s waltz fell into a few of the traps that I feared it might – too much going on, the character taking away from the softness (or lyricism qua Craig), a little too much business and the costume causing difficulties. And yet, Gleb makes as good a Disney prince as Helen does a Disney princess and there were magnificent moments sprinkled throughout, and this is totally one of the nights where they’re going to go big. If it didn’t always come off, well, it’s hard to blame them for trying.
Poor Jamelia has to face the fact she isn’t that popular. However, I thought the jive should suit her and it did. Up until halfway I thought it was really good – she did tire, although there were good choreographic bits.
Mainly because of Claudia, I laughed my way through Aliona and Jay’s story time. Now, I’d spent all week wishing that they’d decided to make Jay the woodsman, not the wolf, but never mind that. I agree that Jay isn’t the showman/ham that many others are, but the boy can dance. I’m glad the judges highlighted his lines as part of their praise and he got one more than last week, which is still improvement; even if it’s not up to the jive’s standard, it’s a perfectly viable trajectory.
I really liked Kevin’s choreography in how he fused Harry Potter with the paso. It went a bit rock and roll (so they weren’t being Harry and Hermione for me, OKAY, some randoms from between the Marauders and Harry’s generation). All 7s felt a little harsh.
Given the Frankenstein theme of the rum—what came next, I thought having Carol’s trail combine her crush on Bryan Adams and her fake!crush on Pashastein was a bit much. Again, an example of someone in the gallery not quite seeing how putting the show together this way would look overall. The rumba was truly terrible (so bad, Darcey and Len cracked out the fours) and I think Pasha must have thought, during the week, that there was too much other damage limitation to tell her about the feet, but I think he felt really bad about it after Len’s lecture.
I wondered how the tango to the Ghostbusters theme would work, but whodathunk it, it worked well!? Mainly because Giovanni concentrated on the content, and I found myself continuing to think ‘ooh, that looks good’ throughout the dance. Good on them – I think she’s blossoming in hold, and has finally has a standout week.
I thought Janette’s see-through red skirt falling over Peter’s white trousers was really effective. He was fine, though I didn’t get the dance when I wasn’t looking at her (and I think that it was a mistake to have ‘I put a spell on you’ moves after doing so in the rumba). There he was, the pre-show favourite and then it turned out there was a taller, better male celeb (not talking about Jeremy), but I literally turned the volume off as he went on and on about respecting the judges and the booing audience shouldn’t boo. (His celebrations at getting all 7s were so sincere. Not.)
Oh, Helen = looking like Kim Catrall playing She-Ra playing a mummy - again, so much quality and stylishness. She owned a lot of that samba (we haven’t seen a lot of samba rolls this season unless if I’ve blocked them out), although I too saw a little wobbly moment. I’m sure they’ll take 34 for the samba – so she, Georgia and Jay and, at a stretch, Jeremy could be happy after the show.

Truly excellent opening dance from the pros. I adored the concept, the way it was a battle – my only quibble would be about the ugly looking lift when Ola and Pasha were in the middle.
The quick recap revealed that Kevin knows more Harry Potter spells than Kellie (not a surprise) and confirmed that Gleb was wearing guyliner.
Ohh, no, Jamelia! It’s basically her being in the middle of the leaderboard, as much as lack of popularity – and maybe the judges (coff!Bruno) being seen as mean to other people who are worse. Even though they are bad. This was her second best performance – I might have voted for her if I'd been watching it live. I’d kind of suspected Kirsty would be joining her (and it was the right call, even though there were fewer mistakes) because I’d seen her name online though I tried to avoid spoilers. (How bad does Carol have to be for people to stop voting for her?)
From what I’ve seen of It Takes Two, the contestants have now reached the hysterical stage, and I’ve reached the obsessed one.
