I watched The National TV Awards on Wednesday night – I was in a weird mood. It’s voted for by the public, so you can play ‘guess the winner’ quite successfully, even if/especially if you don’t watch anything in the category (Ant and Dec win everything they’re up for etc).
For the shows I watched, Downton won because it was its last season, and it looked to me as if Bertie was bumping Edith’s shoulder in the clip of their wedding, which I didn’t pick up on when I watched the Christmas special, but is adorable. (Don’t tell me if I’m wrong.) Strictly won for not having fake dog shenanigans - I can’t have been the only one who snarked my way through that whole ‘bit’ with Matisse, and the British public fancied Aidan Turner so much, they gave him a special award. I hope Eleanor Tomlinson is away working on something awesome, because she wasn’t there.
I may have squeed that there were three Dwarves in the O2.
Dermott O’Leary was in a weird mood, no? The opening harked back to the London Olympics and though I enjoyed it, the I’m a Survivor/Survivor mash-up could have been done at any point in the last seven or eight years (or more). Fleur East is still trying to happen, even as Shayne Ward, who, you know, won The X-Factor once upon a time, offered a vision of what a reasonably succesful contestant looks like. And I even had notes on the Scottish song, although I’m sure the bagpipes were impressive live.
The women who got on stage to speak were all dressed boringly in black (Maisie Williams was the best styled, Mary Berry looked classy and Suranne Jones got away with it because she was heavily pregnant and had green earrings) or white (Holly Willoughby’s dress looked better when she was standing up). Susannah Reid (nice puncturing of Piers Morgan) had some silvery detail, but Laura Carmichael actually wore colours, if only on her skirt.
Last night, I posted I appreciate your appreciation, an Andy/Daisy fic. In one way, I’m had put to explain why I wrote it of all things after the Christmas special as they’re not my favourite pairing - Daisy got on my nerves so much for so long that I thought Andy deserved better and I joke-theorised that it was lust that propelled him to fancy him and that his giving her the cold shoulder only strengthened the attraction, but then I realised I could write that as a story, and with no more canon to create drama, Daisy could grow up a little and they could develop as a couple. I hope that it’s written sympathetically enough, anyway. I surprise myself a lot with my Downton fic (even though it’s usually PG het or gen and speaks to my relationship with canon if it's not AU).
And now, let me make a public service announcement, because someone might as well profit from my bitter personal experience. Back your documents up now. Of course, I'm sure you have a better back-up system than the one I had been quite lax about.
Yes, last night after posting the fic, I suddenly has some difficulty saving stuff on my USB stick and then found a few documents were corrupted and my fiction files...were gone from it. If I had kept to my back-up schedule...but I might as well say ‘if I had a time-turner...’ So, I’ve been scrabbling to find out what I’ve lost and back-up what I’ve got. In a way, it’s a good job I wasn’t more productive with fic since Sepbtember, and there are a couple of things that were saved because I’d saved them elsewhere, but...aargh.
Brooklyn Nine Nine (season 3’s Halloween episode) managed to distract me from kicking myself.
It was obvious that Santiago would get back at Peralta and Holt for not picking her on their team. Fumiero killed the last stretch (although there was one moment where I saw the actress trying not to crack up at some business from Samberg, instead of Amy reacting to Jake). Oh, and I loved Rosa appreciating how she’d done it – the Rosa who was cool.
They were all so into it! THAT’s why the 99 needed to be back together.
To fill the second half of the slot, E4 repeated an old episode, which made sense, because I didn’t think we were so far behind that they could maintain airing two episodes a week. It was the second season opener, which made a nice background as I frantically tried to find and save what I could.
