Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD
3.4 Devils you know

Angsty team/family! There was that scene where Daisy told her father figure that she didn’t like his new girlfriend, and she wasn’t going to play blended families with Whatever Their Acronym Is! And then Coulson gave her an order and she reverted to being his subordinate.

But I don’t blame her. All the Melinda/Andrew and Phil/Rosalind in the world, and that one scene where May asked for back-up and Coulson admitted some of his woes, without really admitting he’d let Hunter off the leash to go after Ward which was the issue she’d come to him about, and the line about not being able to replace May and I now want the scene where she eventually helps him put on a tie or the scene where they make out.

Even though given what else happened this episode, they’ll take awhile to get there.

I felt we could have done with more of Alicia. After all that happened at the end of the last series, coming to SHIELD was a big deal and would have shown another dimension to Lincoln’s issues. So, I could do with more of longstanding Inhumans like the couple Lash killed and what they feel about all the newbies and publicity.

Instead, we got Daisy not really keeping her distance from Frye, and the partial explanation for what had been going on. Lash deliberately didn’t kill Daisy, right? Before turning into human shape, which I know they were emphasising as the big deal. I was pooh-poohing Mac’s great white shark theory because (a) no evidence and (b) it came from Mac.

The ‘I am necessary’ line was very Jossian.

Anyway, Daisy continues to be sympathetic over the treatment meted out to her kind.

Meanwhile Andrew got a glimpse of how very screwed up Melinda was over him and what he did before being presumably blown up. Oh, Hunter, you have no idea the world of glaring you’ve pulled on yourself. Hiding behind Bobbi is his best hope.

Bobbi had little more to do except point her chin as her (ex)husband was an idiot – although his wanting to get in there and deal with Ward before she did made sense. We found out that she was a little more damaged than she appeared, with Palicki glowing all healthily. And of course Bobbi had to put up with the ways of the Fitzsimmons and a terrible attempt at emotional blackmail from Leo.

Jemma did a lot of defensive time-wasting all episode. But she is still anti-aliens (except for Skye, presumably.)

Ward did a lot of pontificating, but having his men (his Hydra are all warrior men, snore) be able to threaten Andrew was a smart move for a wannabe big bad. Hunter injuring him was about all he could have got away with at this point.

So, a good episode where there was forward movement. Poor Andrew, I was so not invested in him. I’ll happily take his appearing to be dead (there was no body) on face value and look forward to the anger and angst from May, although the team should have someone try to look out for their mental health.

One last, very important thing, I don’t believe Coulson has a laser finger, but now that he’s come up with it, he is so going to be asking Fitz to create one, and, like Chekov’s gun, it will appear at a key point in the rest of the season.
