Agents of SHIELD 3.5
It’s the what Jemma Simmons did over hiatus episode! I find that I’m not familiar enough with Belle and Sebastian’s oeuvre to suggest a song title for this.
It was different, which was refreshing, and it was good to finally know what had happened. The epsiode wasn’t as good as it could have been (even leaving aside that was competing with a lot of bigger budget survival movies I’ve seen recently). The planetside stuff was really effective, though, while the underground stuff was clearly filmed in the studio.
Will...is hotter than Fitz (and I was perfectly happy with Fitzsimmons remaining platonic because I never saw things from Fitz’s point of view all the time as a default) even if he seemed a bit dully sane, given the givens. I would get more of a kick out of a fanficcy take on this trope is what I think I’m saying.
That moment when the flare was reflected in her eyes was beautiful.
What other character could they have sent? Jemma brought the science, the chirpy attitude and the talking to herself. I loved that she tried and she tried and by the time she couldn't try any more, she'd rubbed off on Will.
There was definitely the idea that Earthlings were sending people over to ‘Death’ as sacrifices. And I liked the intentionality of that link, because while the writer did a decent job of explaining how it was capable of supporting human and other life – warm biolumescent core, close enough mix of atmosphere and gravity – they were lucky. I kind of expected the sun coming out to destroy them all (as it didn't, why didn't they take something upside to recharge instead of having a picnic? Or along with having a picnic?) The writer and director were thinking too much of the ironic moment where Will was bathed in sunlight, alone, again, only worse off because he had no bullet.
I liked the way the action slotted into what we’d already seen and, of course Fitz will try to help you, Jemma, even while his heart is breaking.
Gotham 2.4 Strike Force
If Penguin’s speech/snit to what looked like eighties pop video star wannabes (why in candlelight?) was dull, the new captain’s was even more so. And he kept making speeches.
Theo wants to turn Metropolis into Gotham or something, and he is quite dull, especially around his unhinged women and Penguin.
But Penguin didn’t have good security for his mother. BAD SON. So, Butch is going to have to mask up and do crazy stuff all day.
Watching the new captain railroad Jim into creating a team of good cops from the cadets was D U L L compared with forming the Maniax.
The second half picked up, though, with Selina joining Alfred to wait for Bruce after prep school 2: this time I’ll be normalish. Alfred punching Selina was a visceral thing to watch, because it’s a grown man punching a teenage girl. Add to that that he was lashing out at her to protect Bruce when she was partially motivated the same way in killing Reggie. And my girl has no-one to protect her, so for all that Alfred making Bruce run and ‘knowing his place’ was meant to make us feel for him and chuckle at him, I was VERY CROSS with him.
I don’t think we needed the second clip of Selina apart from the visual contrast between her and Bruce and Blondie’s milieu. We certainly didn’t need to hear Alfred’s line repeated, but then the sound effects (like what they did to No Glasses!Edward's voice) and music cues were far from subtle.
I don’t mind Robin Lord Taylor hamming it up as Penguin, as he did all episode, ably seconded by Butch and Victor (if the newbie cadets had fatally injured the latter, I would have been beyond peeved). And I really liked Penguin cutting across Jim’s speechifying. If only there had been more of that sort of attitudein the writers’ room.
Presumably Penguin will try to get Barbara on side because he’s failing to crack Gallavan and find his mother otherwise, and even on this show, she can’t be gagged or told to wait and play fanboy fodder with Tabitha for ever. (Also, the more they build it up, the more expectation there is that Barbara unleashed will be epic, which it's probably not going to be.)
Gallavan is still stultifying, and I am sad to say that I don’t think Frain has managed to project many layers, even though Theo is quite the manipulator. In the meeting with Bruce, I hoped we’d see a flicker of Bruce’s intelligence cut through him also hero worshipping Gallant, but all we got was staunch loyalty to Jim Gordon, which, eh, and then Gallavan distracted him with another ‘relative’. (Selina coming across her should be good.)
More masks and darkened eye-make-up in this episode, green hues at Nygma’s house and lots of big sets with lots of people in them. But my main reaction is you killed off what could have been the Joker for THIS? No, I want chaos (and I’m more interested in the Penguin version than the Nygma one) and capable, smart people dealing with it.
And for Selina not to be punched in the face, apparently.
