shallowness: Catwoman looking at the Batsign in the Gotham City night sky (Catwoman watching Batverse films)

Gotham 2.6 By Fire

I quite liked this, because of the focus on Selina who ‘doesn’t care’, except she does, about Bridget of the slightly shared past who she wanted to have a safe and free future. And I didn’t want to see Selina’s sad, betrayed face after the bravado crumbled.

Obviously, Bridget was toast – I thought in order to get Selina to a place where she will stand up for the girls plural of the neighbourhood. But then I got excited about Indian Hills (Wayne Enterprises is as bad as Luthorcorp) because Jerome might still be alive. And, obviously, Bridget the firebug (which I prefer to ‘firefly’ in this context) looks like she’s upgrading to freak status.

As it was, I enjoyed watching a girl get Bridget’s arc. They built it up well with her discovery that she enjoyed lighting things up in the previous episode and how much of a kick she got out of accompanying Selina on her little fundraising stunt, and apart from the adrenaline, she was able to apply Selina’s concern for her to others, who were only a few years older than they were. Selina’s not there, and may be even further away from it after what’s happened.

I thought that the show did fairly well on the narrow wire that Jim traversed with his promise to Selina (more cautious than his promise to Bruce) and his vow to find the rookie’s killer and bring them to justice and crossing the line (except he didn’t get much from his victim) in interrogation to being the negotiating voice of calm with Selina.

I didn’t care about Nygma’s self-inflicted tragedy and Kristin’s bad decisions, but the script felt better – Harvey calling strike force the ‘fascist youth’ and striking a deal with Ivy. IVY! (Selina would have ratted her out when faced with the same threat, even though she’s upgraded to gun-stashing ‘gangster’. I could do with more interaction between her and Lee.)

Other stuff happened – Bruce got played like a violin. Unfortunately, I laughed at Alfred making his point about distractions by punching him. Oh, dear.

Galavan sort of worked as a saneish restraint on Tabby and Babs, though I question letting the congressman see his crazy evil persona and I’m glad they didn’t kill off poor, tortured Butch. He should at least last long enough to see a certain spoiler come to fruition. As for whether Penguin should or does trust him...
