Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD
3.9 Closure
I felt a little moment’s warmth towards Coulson/Rosalind, mainly for the fact they were treating eating burgers as a fine dining experience, but I did expect something to go boom, if not quite what happened.
But then, it feels like Coulson hasn’t had a good fight scene in a while – Ward needs better henchmen, obviously.
Let’s not think too much about how Mac was so near. It’s just good that he was able to extract Coulson!
I thought for a second we were going to have flashbacks as Coulson questioned everyone about Ward. In the midst of all the on-the-nose analysis amid reminiscing, I’m glad they acknowledged that Simmons crushed on Ward.
Ward was ‘putting Coulson through his paces’. Yeah, with second-rate henchmen.
I still don’t think Ward’s scalp is Hunter’s, although I think sending Bobbi with Hunter will improve the outcome, but it looked like they were setting up Coulson vs. Ward, and even though what Ward did is...on Ward, that makes sense after the events of the episode, though overall, I’d say he’s more May’s business.
It made sense that Coulson appointed Mac assistant Director, based on what he said and that I think they’ve been trying to make Mac the (wayward) conscience.
Personally, I wasn’t sure they should have been trusting Banks, but I was unwontedly suspicious.
So Malick had Fitzsimmons, Ward had time to see Mad Max: Fury Road, and I loved feisty Simmons, although splitting Fitz and Simmons and torturing one of them was the way to get results.
I think Hunter was the voice of reason at one point.
Oh, hello littlest Ward. Do we trust you? Even after he kept up his side of the bargain of keeping Ward talking. Do we think we’ve seen the last of you?
Mac was a bit indecisive as acting Director. Even traumatised, May could cut through the flannelling quicker. Perhaps Coulson could either be less patronising about her inability to do stuff because of her feelings or could step back from his self-imposed mission. Yeah, perhaps.
Meanwhile, Fitz folded (I hoped he had a cunning plan, but it was a big romantic gesture). Jemma didn’t look that badly tortured.
Daisy got her team of Inhumans.
Why did the teleporter make a move towards Jemma when he could have frozen her with his mind? Anyway, I approve of Fitz trying to save Will, although I wonder what state the poor man will be in.
Yo, Malick, when he’s back, Ward will kill you to be in charge. I mostly expect him to come back now that they’ve got the younger brother in play.
Bless Bobbi for saying what I said to Coulson. Not that he listened. And I did laugh at the whole jumping out of a plane through an inter-planetary portal thing – it’s so much more epic than jumping through a window (start of the episode).
I do note that the three white men from season 1 have ended up on the desert planet. It’s rather noticeable when the show has so many other options!
THEN last night, instead of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, I watched my first full episode of Scorpion, which I feel the need to admit here. There had been kissing in the last episode and I wanted to see what the fall-out would be. I also knew that as it’s a ‘half-hour’ show, B99 would be easy to catch up with.
I am fully aware that Scorpion is arrant nonsense. It’s about a team of youngish geniuses corralled by Robert Patrick, corralled by Ros from Frasier, working together to solve problems for the US Government. Things get progressively worse during the episode/on their mission, but they usually solve it with brains and team work.
They are Walter (the least convincing Irishman ever. Was he adopted?) the most brilliant, who is the worst at socialisation, despite being in love with Paige, the normal one, who is actually brilliant at connecting with people so not so normal (she convincingly looks like an Irish-American because she’s played by Katherine McPhee). She has a young son who hero-worships Walter and they are the alpha when will they get together? couple. The portmanteau name is Waige.
I know. It is terrible, and yet they would make a remarkably good-looking couple.
The team also includes lovely Sly who is Walter’s widowed brother-in-law, and the beta couple who are getting more of a move on than Walter and Paige. They are Happy who ironically is a cold and prickly type who is great at making things and understanding the science behind it. She is adored by Toby aka Doc, who knows a bit about biology but mainly psychology and spends an inordinate amount of time wearing a hat. Happy seems to be the one who ends up in life-threatening situations the most (based on the last three or four episodes), but it’s always resolved so they can have a team-bonding sceene at their workshop/den towards the end of the episode.
Happy/Toby were the ones who kissed in the last episode.
I am not going to quote the rationale that led to Robert Patrick telling Toby (WRT him and Happy) ‘it must be love, son’, because it was absurd. BUT this episode featured the ‘huddle together naked for warmth in a sleeping bag’ trope IN ANTARTICA.
I blame The Good Wife. And also maybe the whole outsiders bonding in a team cum found family environment, and saving the world with science thing.
Gotham
2.9 A Bitter Pill to Swallow
Again, following up the consequences of the last episode, but kind of with very low stakes and a lot of violence, as per usual, because Tabby decided to buy a hit on Jim. Michelle Gomez was good as The Mother, slowly realising the target was the main character of the show er, hard to kill.
Jim was worrying about ‘the line’. I wondered which one he was worrying about. He wasn’t much for following orders, again, but Harvey must have been, because he wasn’t around. I know Jim decided not to be ‘a monster’ (dude, Barbara is criminally insane, stop listening to her) and then had reason for feeling guilty for not killing The Cannibal Assassin, but mainly I’m waiting for Lee to dump him. He did not go to see Barbara ‘for the case’.
Bruce got his first key to a hotel room off a girl! He is still young enough that it’s hilarious. Also, he is still a terrible liar and obvious schemer, so Alfred had his number. Alfred’s job is currently warning girls off Bruce, which is also hilarious. I still think that Galavan’s file would have contained a convincing name who was really someone he wanted to be rid of.
There was merely one measly scene with Selina! But it did suggest that she’d found a way to deal with Silver.
Penguin woke up to find out he was being looked after by ‘Doctor’ Nygma, and we had the much anticipated (not) (well not by me, YMMV) Penguin and Ed hanging out, with Ed hoping for top tips on being a serial killer. Sadly for him, Oswald was despondent about being a killer and stuff, but there was little doubt that the future supervillain would get over that.
I was hoping but not expecting that Officer Parkes would make it (and leave Gotham). However, the Cannibal Assassin had other ideas.
I found the fight scene in the lift entertaining, while the fight scene in the penthouse suite was just dark, and then everything involving the Cannibal Hitman was just nasty. I wish the show would stop going there.
