shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Nashville irresistible Juliette Barnes)
[personal profile] shallowness
I am miffed that E4 has lost Nashville to Sky Living, which means I won’t be able to see whether Juliette gets better and things are repaired between her and Avery (and other things I care less about). Grr.

I then caught up on some E4 shows last night.

B99 3.12 Nine Days

Jake’s attempt to cheer up Holt descended into escalting silliness – the fake goitres WERE disturbing. Not sure if Holt yelling ‘Kase’ or the fight was the funniest bit, or Holt descending somewhat to Peralta’s level because of his fever.

Well, actually, it was Terry destroying the Captain’s room that made me gasp/laugh the most. Give or take the dance stuff, Gina was the voice of reason, beating even Amy as the non-sick straight woman to the mumpy men. But on the other hand, Gina wore an absurd hat to the dog’s funeral.

Let’s skip over the dead dog to Rosa’s complete failure to grasp why Boyle was upset – down to trying to replace him with a perfectly cute puppy. I loved the way she held it even after her move rebounded on her and she adored it like she was always going to. Bicycle helmet for a heart. Heh. Not to mention Hitchcock and Scully’s definition of a hunger strike.

Agents of SHIELD 3.10 Maveth

Fitz was very scornfully Scottish around Ward and on the alien planet – the Hydra inspiration was a bit lame.

I liked the motivation for both SHIELD missions, although I hope that this Andrew thing doesn’t last too long as I worried it might curtail May a little.

That telekinetic seems enthusiastic about using his fellow Inhumans as fodder for Hydra (I’d say he was underdeveloped but this is a cast of a dozen).

Dream!Constance waking Coulson was a bit too clichéd for me (in fact, I see his popculture referencing and raise it Jean Grey and Wolverine, and not in a complimentary tone).

Having Ward be the one to stick the love triangle knife in on purpose for Fitz ramped up the tension even more.

May’s line about not thinking what the rookies were thinking was ace.

As was Jemma fashioning her own escape. Less ace? Her not trusting herself – the answer to ‘Who will protect you?’ is who kept herself alive so long on an alien planet! – and trusting Andrew...Oh, Jemma, bad call.

I was urging Coulson to shoot the monologuing Ward sooner, tbh.

Huntingbird were cracking wise quite well (I still regret they didn’t get a spin-off).

Ouch to May finding the evidence of what Andrew/Lash had done. (Well played, Ming-Na.)

Linc being the one who wanted to close the portal felt a little like they were making him argumentative just because. After all, he and the Inhumans have been at the other end of ‘aliens bad! Protect us and shoot first’ mentality, and Daisy’s loyalty to Coulson and Fitz should be understandable. I don’t love him in a polo neck.

I went ‘aww’ at Daisy saying she’d stick with partner Mac (even as I thought ‘and if he dies so that we have Director May, I can bear it). She both did and didn’t have a point about her powers maybe helping with the portal.

I was legitimately surprised that Maveth was Will. Yes, despite seeing the episode title because I was watching it from the All4 website, I never got anywhere nearer to suspicious than thinking it was a good job Will knew Fitz through Jemma to trust him so much. I mean, how come Jemma picked up on the desolation and Fitz didn’t, who knows? But now we know why Fitz will need Coulson, thought I, and had a little moment for hot, now written out Will.

Except Fitz could apparently fight an ancient evil alien in the no fly zone where he was in full possession of his senses quite well. Oh, show, you and your desire to show Fitz in the most heroic light.

Frankly didn’t care about Coulson taking his time to kill Ward, say goodbye to Constance and get off the planet. I spent most of that bit urging Fitz to go through the portal if he loved Simmons so much and still maintaining that what happened two episodes ago didn’t mean Ward wasn’t Coulson’s to kill.

They did a little too much playing with the timing for their own good at the end.

Anyway, Big Heroic Reunion, and Mac strides towards Bobbi and Hunter (though I don’t think he was much in accord with them this ep, due to his brief promotion). Daisy and Linc get the kiss – I had to concentrate on their throughline is that Linc has to admit he cares now that he nearly lost her. And get used to her throwing herself into the heroics. But hugs in longer established relationships matter more: May and Coulson, both battered in different ways (because May has lost Andrew and I don’t think Lash is down or out) and Simmons who didn’t know what had happened or what she wanted to happen. The writers wrote their way out of an awkward love triangle is what happened!

Sadly, Maveth was not dead (and there I was thinking Fitz had somehow killed an ancient and powerful alien with his puny fists) and got through (er, how did it manage that without our agents noticing? Or was that what the long look between Fitz and Coulson was about? Who knows?) and Fred has become Illyria, although Ward is like the anti!Fred on this show in that all his former colleagues hate him. Hopefully Maveth-in-Ward will be less fond of pontificating if they must keep Brett Dalton on.

I’m also mildly worried about whether there will be major crossovering with Captain America 2, because we’re so out of sync in the UK.
