shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (CJ at work TWW)
In a very January 2022 move, it appears as though All4 has dropped The West Wing. I'm now left bitterly ruing a decision I made to finish watching a season of another show on DVD instead the other night, although I don't know if TWW had already been dropped. It's galling beause I haven't rewatched the season 3 finale. If I had, and it was a case of finally deciding to start buying the show on DVDs and start with season 4, that would be one thing, but at a time of rising inflation and trying to be sensible about money, I may end up buying a whole season's DVD to rewatch one episode. First world problem, obviously, but not the only one.

This is how far behind I am on writing up my reaction posts (see below), I watched the final episode of season 4 last night, and without getting into any detail, I was gutted, because being the spoilerphobe I am, I’d taken the fact that the fourth season DVD is described as ‘The Final Season’ as meaning that the showmakers knew they weren’t coming back, if not at the start of the season, by at its end, and had written an appropriate send off. Nope. We had what would be an adequate season’s end, if another season was coming next. Grr. The show’s four seasons have been comfort viewing for about a year (a very difficult year - I can’t tell you how glad I’ve been that Sylvester Dodd is a fictional character living through an entirely different 2020-21) and now I’m left mumbling ‘Is there a comic book?’ And I don’t read comics however much I guzzle comics-inspired media. It’s a daft action drama that’s been off air for a few years with no canonical resolution. It’s never nice feeling kicked by American network TV ruthlessness.

(I know this will be a time for fanfiction, once I have processed a little. And ideally found the one disc I have somehow lost over the past few months. )

Scorpion season 3 - Disc 4.

I rated these four episodes about the same.

So, I’ve tried to tidy this up and temper it since I first typed up my reaction, but this is basically a rant, and I have to admit I didn’t realise these were the final two episodes of the third season until I doubled checked the episode title.

I posted a ficlet! A Practical Solution (Sky High, Warren/Layla, future fic). It’s wintery, if not Christmassy fluff. First drafted after I saw the prompt, polished and posted on Sunday (yesterday on AO3). I may have more to say about this in my annual fic round-up, but this means I’ve posted something every month of this year.

I caught the first hour or so of the Star Trek reboot movie on telly, and similarities between the film and the Star Trek Discovery pilot )

Now this is where my thoughts about episode 2 of Star Trek: Discovery should be, but it’s unavailable for catch-up on All 4. I’m irked, and I’m going to be irked every time they advertise it on E4 etc now. If you want people to watch a show (when you’ve been changing the timeslot) and aren’t making it available online even for a week as I’m used to with some American shows, good luck with the viewing figures. I presume it’s a rights thing, but it’s a bit useless.

Traitors 1/8

2019 has been a wasteland of TV dramas I wanted to watch so far, so I perked up when I heard about this: a spy show set in post-war London. Now, I’ve seen it, I’m less enthused. spoilers )

I intended to continue last week’s ‘space’ theme for Music Monday, and link to Blur’s Far Out, but I can’t find the album version, which is my favourite. Bah.

I last posted about Smallville in May. I’ve found it’s best to leave a good long while between watching each episode, but I have finished disc 2.

Season 5, episodes 5 'Thirst' to 8 'Solitude'. spoilers )
shallowness: Beautiful blue alien in front of colourful background (Zhaan Farscape wonders I've seen)
I have mixed feelings, a lot of which are of the frustrated variety, about this film. I can understand why reviewers gave it middling ratings because some aspects are brilliant and others are not good. If you like your science fiction weird and wonderful and colourful, go see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 first this but be aware there are problems.

details but not too spoilery )

Basically, if nobody vids this source, I will be gutted.

I tried watching Top of the Lake: China Girl, but dropped out less than half an hour in, and I won’t be trying to go back. I was dubious about the change of location, because even as you were watching horrible things be implied and then happen, you had this astounding scenery. This continuation has…Sydney.

shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Rogue X-Men Films)
I tried watching the National TeIevision Awards, but a lot of it made me cringe, so I channel hopped a great deal.

As for the Oscar nominations, my main take out is that it's great Arrival got so many, but not Best Actress for Adams? I'm not the only one who thinks this is wrong. Yes, I do have to caveat it by saying I haven't seen all the nominated performances, although I hope to see most of them - a decision made because I want to see the films or not. Of the two that I've seen, I have no problems with Stone and Streep getting nominated, and even if there's a little voice that thinks that a certain speech and a certain tweet made the latter a cert (though Stone's the favourite to win, right?) what Streep did to produce Florence Foster Jenkins's terrible singing was a technical tour de force.

But, Amy Adams was outstanding in Arrival - its heart and soul. It's not a showy part, but the character carries the film. I did wonder if having that and Nocturnal Animals (which I didn't see) out in the same awards season hurt her.

I posted three ficlets on Sunday:

Paterfamilias, Scorpion, U, Cabe Gallo & ensemble.
Summary: Cabe Gallo has three sons, two daughters and one grandson who he isn’t related to and never officially adopted.

It’s All About the Chemistry, Sky High, PG, Warren Peace, Layla Williams, Boomer, Medulla (Layla/Warren, canonical relationships)
Summary: Layla Williams doesn’t attend her school reunion with Will or Larry.

A Long Time Coming, Marvel Cinematic Universe RPF, U, OCs and A-listers.
Summary: Welcome to the red carpet for the premiere of the long-awaited Black Widow movie!

Apart from all being fills for comment-fic prompts, they’re all future fics. Two are new departures fandom-wise – this is the first time I’ve written RPF! Obviously, I expect every word I wrote about a Black Widow movie to come true! This is also the first Scorpion fic I’ve written. I drafted it back in the spring when I first saw the prompt, but was hesitant to post even this ficlet because I haven’t seen the first season and a half. Returning to it last week, I decided I could live with that.

I also drafted a fill for the ‘any high school couple, are they still together at the 10-year high school reunion fic?’ prompt back in the spring, which obviously had to be about Sky High, and left it unfinished, wondering if perhaps I could expand it, but after some polishing decided to post it as was.

I saw the ‘red carpet’ prompt on Saturday, so it's not just a case of polishing and posting old drafts.

There is some Pacific Rim 2 casting news. here.

Feelings. Spoilers. )

I am cheered, though, by today's news about Channing Tatum potentially playing a spoiler ).
shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (POI Zoe and John at work)
Oh look, another film review.

Considering I was excited when I heard there was going to be another Bourne movie, that Damon, Greengrass and Stiles were returning and that Vikander was joining the cast, I am disappointed, and this is in a year when there have been a lot of disappointing sequels several years after the first film in a franchise got me invested.

I posted Fancy Hotel, a Person of Interest/The Night Manager ficlet. Zoe and John were the focus of the prompt and remain the focus of the fic, but I had TNM on my mind and it was the spark for me. I wish I could have come up with a better title, but at least I managed a summary.

Of course, I’m now behind again because I chose to watch Scorpion (post to come).

I went to see a double-bill of films yesterday for the first time in ages. First was Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Yes, I know. One word review: ponderous.

more words ) There were lots of problems, but I’ll focus on the most relevant one, which is that you’ve seen the trailer(s), and who hasn't given the promo push, most of the film will not come as a surpise.

And before this film a new-to-me Captain America: Civil War trailer aired and I think that contained a major development that made me clap my hands to my mouth in disbelief that they’d show that now. What is wrong with the people behind cutting these trailers? Stick to the first third, show glimpses of the main characters, give a flavour of the mood...people are going to go see films featuring Captain America, Iron Man, Batman and Superman!

Having said that, The Lego Batman Movie trailer filled me with glee.

What I wasn’t spoiled for in BvS:DoJ was Read more... ) Roll on the Wonder Woman solo movie, which seems like the only thing DC is doing that Marvel seems to need to worry about.

The second film I saw was Eddie the Eagle, which is thoroughly entertaining. It has also had a huge promo push in the UK, and benefits from being a sporting underdog dramedy based on a true story that I'm about old enough to remember, but I don't think they used the last third in the promo material.

Finally, I've caught up on Parks and Rec
