[personal profile] shallowness
I’m still watching episodes of Scorpion live on purpose. This week the team was dealing with an African dictator of Made Up Country who had built a very dangerous weapon from plans the Nazis had left behind in his country all those years ago. (Cue raised eyebrows and going along with it because of what I will next tell you.) All you need to know about the weapon is that it was a ‘sun gun’ – the characters referred to a lot of chemical elements and stuff, but the important thing is that it was a ‘sun gun’, because the American soldier who’d found this out was Sly’s father. Dun dun dun.

And relations were not good between father and son. (Get it? Yes, writers, dears, I got it!) In what I think may be typical for this show, they didn’t look like they were related, although the fact that Sly was so different, being a genius and all, was one of the causes of the rift between them. They managed to cross it enough to save their lives – I was so glad it wasn’t Happy in danger for once – and an actual line that was said was that Sly’s father was glad that Sly had found the right family for him (Team Scorpion, with a more affirming father figure and all).

I will give the writers props, amid all the silly nonsense, for having it make sense for the Dictator to want rocket-making Walter to work for him, instead of just singling him out because he’s the main character, and for the reveal that Happy gave Ralph, Paige’s son, instructions on how to look after Toby – who had caught a cold helping Walter at the start of the episode, and really appreciated gestures like a bowl of his favourite soup (without a spoon as far as I could tell). Easier to admit to a kid that she’s falling for Toby than to Toby himself at the moment. But it’s also a nice call-back to Toby saying he’d take care of Happy. (What? I may have watched some vids.)

Meanwhile, Walter was trying to be more social and failing at speed dating, but learning from it to cosy up to the Dictator who could of course kill him. Love interest Paige had feelings about all this. As she is played by Katherine McPhee, the show made them duet, see the subject line, as a distraction for Happy to do something for plot-related reasons.

Terrible, fun show. I am still analysing the ingredients that make it so appealing.
