Gotham 2.10 The Son of Gotham

I felt like I was watching an ep of Angel more than Gotham, with the monks wandering around town with their ceremonial knives and rituals (and the Captain claiming to be five by five). I note that this officer’s funeral got aired and the works, but not the member(s) of Strike Force after all that palaver about them/

Jim’s gut was being a good detective, even if he was all conflicted and too busy with it to pay heed to Lee (dump him), and not following his captain’s orders, abetted by Harvey, who was quite amusing.

Whatever, a big part of this episode involved Bruce and Selina teaming up, so I was gripped by that. It was a good start that she left him speaking to air, as she climbed a tree, which always pleases me. But then she had to watch him lie/tell the truth/flirt with Silver. (I note that for plot reasons, Bruce was suddenly capable of lying to Alfred about the ‘fencing lessons’).

Blah blah blah fighting, blah blah blah Jim got some cover for ignoring his Captain, blah blah blah sewers.

Oswald as Edward’s secret housemate is trying to be this season’s Selina, Barbara and Ivy. Do not talk to Ed alone, Lee.

Bruce and Silver’s kidnapper was actually quite entertaining (wasn’t he th Very Bad No Good man in Revenge’s last season?), especially in his disdain for his victims’ youth. I wasn’t surprised when it turned out that he was in Bruce’s pay – the suspicion being confirmed by the fake blood for me. Silver ‘letting down her mask’ was far less interesting than Bruce discarding his innocence to show the angry orphaned son (Mazouz’s performance and the visual conveyed this fine, no need for the bombastic music, but I doubt that there are ever notes on this show that add the words ‘more’ and ‘subtle’).

Oh, and of course Selina snuck into the Gallavans’ apartment. Apparently she had tunnel vision when she was there, but I’m sure she was very angry with Silver.

I will give Jim props for being smart enough to trick the monk into more gnomic utterances.

The fight scene between Alfred and Tabitha was entertainingly meaningful, with Alfred being willing to fight dirty and Tabby getting chunks out of him. And Alfred calling Bruce a ‘little boy’ which he’s already outgrowing.

Er, maybe the Captain will regret insisting Jim turned up to the hearing. All there is to wonder is whether the Mayor was conditioned to blame the Penguin in the court back when he was being tortured or was threatened into it later. Poor Oswald, being blamed for the wrong acts of villainy.

Best of all: Bruce/Selina scene. My heart! Of course ‘Cat’ was curious about what he’d whispered, and that curiosity must have been sweet for Bruce (especially because he did crush on Silver who betrayed that). But what he said? And the kicker – that it was about Selina? And how it flustered her!? Steal his cars always and forever, my girl. Plus the line about how she didn’t want him to change too much? EEEEEE.

We’ll give Jim a pass for being too busy not to think that ‘the son of Gotham’ might be significant. Or not even remotely obscure.

Gallavan is dull even at crazy speechifying, but I liked that he was a miles better fighter than Jim. Of course, I didn’t believe for a second he or his henchmen would kill Jim quickly or slowly. And while it was nice for Penguin to save him, and typical that he was so crazed that he started slapping a barely conscious Jim around, why couldn’t Gabe’s men have followed Gallavan onwards...

To Wayne manor, where the son of Gotham was all alone, not able to enjoy his success for a night, sans Selina, sans Alfred, not Batman yet...DUN DUN DUN.

Except Gallavan isn’t going to kill him.

Gotham was anthropomorphised a LOT this episode. There were also a lot of heavy-handed references to masks, to the point that you’d have been sozzled if you’d made a drinking game of them.
