From Russia, with love

Agents of SHIELD 3.13 Parting Shot
Huntingbird on a mission, of course, with the hooky flashforward scene and the thirtysomething hours earlier device INEVITABLY. I was snorting a lot at Bobbi’s sass and Lance’s spouting and wondering if this would mainly be a taster for the spin-off that never was, but everyone else piled in, and I snickered some more at Hunter being rightly scared of May, but not scared enough.
I didn’t expect Bobbi to be the one to ‘break’ i.e. give the interrogator enough to realise he could pin it on Hunter, although I had faith that she wouldn’t break any more, just feel really, really bad.
I’m with Daisy: aww, they didn’t even have a canonical honeymoon.
Let’s handwave this depiction of Russian geopolitics. That guy who was trying to get Malick to back their coup is totally a Hey, It’s That Russian Guy.
A nice reconciliation between Hunter and May – while he’s all but screaming that however well he’s been faking it, he’s maybe not an agent, not like Bobbi is. And I started to worry about him because of the title of the episode.
Why were all the Russians not talking Russian with each other?
Headcanon that Bobbi knows Daisy’s watched Orphan Black.
No one made a Peter Pan joke? Not even a teensy one?
But for a while there, if Daisy couldn’t find a resonance, I thought they really weren’t going to beat the Inhuman assassin, who was pounding them all with his ‘dark force’ until the writers found a way for Bobbi to kill Glory via Ben and get both Bobbi and Hunter where they needed to be i.e. captured.
And then they cranked it up from the moment Hunter was dumped in Bobbi’s interrogation room, and I wasn’t sure if they were talking about him taking the fall or WHAT, but with the ‘Russian prime minister’ (who sounded slightly Scottish when he talked to the Marvel President so the accent coach might want to work harder) having stitched them up it wasn’t looking good. And then Phil came in, but I didn’t dare breathe again, and he discovered that they were willing to sacrifice themselves, so it was ‘what’, but at least ‘what’ wasn’t Russian prison. And Phil had to tell the Original Team minus Ward but with Mack that Huntingbird were now disavowed.
The ‘spies goodbye’ scene was flat-out lovely, and at least the characters got to walk away mostly whole and together. I hope they come back for special episodes, because Bobbi, especially, has been ace. Another part of me hopes Palicki gets a really excellent vehicle and is too busy.
This was a very good episode and goodbye – I suppose they felt they had to cull the team, and ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’ were the most expendable, storywise. After all, they were talking about hiving them off this time last year.
And then the story moved on with the stinger that Daddy Malick has a girl after his own (black, black) heart.

Councillor Jam is quite the nemesis, no?
Is it wrong that I felt that this mere black-tie gala to build the park is no Harvest Fair?
It was all funny, especially Leslie’s fake TV segment and Donna’s chair-by-chair strategy, but Ron on TV with the hungover body of Joan Calamazzo draped all over the studio, dispensing Swansonisms was the best. I could have watched the whole thing. Except maybe the tracheotomy.
As to the To Be Continued I am such a Ben without Leslie, because I’m wondering who could officiate, where her mother is etc? But that Ben and co. had got the event going without Leslie, and her effect on him is such that he’s suggesting THIS because she wants to get married now.

So, they started dealing with all the practicalities. Ann’s point about all the crazy stuff Leslie has had her do leading to this was so right. The practicalities all went wrong, but the sign of Li’l Sebastian in the snow was perfectly absurd and meaningful.
And they killed the second half, from Chris bringing Ben the letter that sent them to Pawnee, Ann making Leslie’s skirt of all the important papers in her life, April and Andy getting a grandma.
Jam admitted to financially gaining if the lot had been sold to the burger joint.
The switch of the location to the office was perfect. I don’t think we’ve heard Retta sing on the show before, so that was lovely. Neither Tom nor Jerry screwed up the officiating and the flashbacks were well-earned and nicely juxtaposed with parts of the ceremony. Plus the mural of the flowers!
I think the show timed the wedding and park plotlines well.

Date: 2016-04-09 01:34 pm (UTC)But I suppose we'll see them in the spin-off shortly. Kinda iffy about the premise that they're sort of mercenaries/spies for hire but I do hope there will be crossovers with Agents of SHIELD.

Date: 2016-04-11 06:04 pm (UTC)They were good additions to the team, I thought.
If the spin-off is on ABC, they're sure to have some crossovers with the mothershow. Don't they do ones with the DC shows on the CW all the time?
