shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (POI Zoe and John at work)
[personal profile] shallowness
Undercover episode 5/finale

It didn’t help, I think, that we’d had a fortnight’s wait between episodes, but I was confused, especially by what Nick was trying to achieve, a lot of the time. Obviously, he was desperate and he was plotting and things got clearer like why he'd given Mrs A up falsely, although using his compromised son to make sure the police knew he’d be at the clearing felt callous. (Though not as stupid as Maya TAKING THE KIDS to such a dangerous situation and urging them to run towards it. I think the Scottish guy shot to maim Dan, but it came close.)

Also, I know I’m no Q, but it looked to me like Nick was trying to use a USB stick to record the conversations. Huh?

Maya was a bit of a terrible lawyer, again, in the US Supreme Court. I was glad the judges pointed out to her that she's not, you know, American. I think her ‘argument’ was trying everything she could think of, which is going scattershot, not 'going big'. Fortunately, Rudy’s capacity for oratory was not diminished in the least and he could give a great big speech about how he had been tortured, thank you very much. (Sorry to be flippant, but I felt the handling of this strand was a little too self-righteous when it wasn't well written in other regards, even though, of course, the death penalty is an extremely serious matter.)

The big reveal that Michael had killed the mayor didn’t...it didn’t excuse what happened to him or Rudy and the witness to Rudy’s innocence, or the way that Maya had been spied upon, or Abigail’s death, or the fact that these cops were basically vigilantes. I’m glad that Maya didn’t look like she was going to drop it, even though all her smarts seemed to fall apart when it came to arguing in court. If she could ever find a way to get an unarrestably man into court.

Ending on the family finding out what Nick’s real name was was both a tease and a clever ending, but I’m unconvinced about it all holding together, or the final reveals being satisfying enough. However, Adrian Lester really excelled as Nick tried to gain people’s trust, left right and centre in this episode, and Sophie Okenedo’s performance, as I’ve said, has been sensational throughout.
