AOS 3.22 Ascension
Solid finale, with a lot that was good about it. Linc wasn’t who I expected to die (Hive aside) because I’d seen something where Chloe Bennet seemed to be criticsing Marvel, which made me think she was no longer on the show, so that the people formerly known as Skye and Ward, indeed, as Skyeward were going to be written off. The episode certainly dangled Daisy sacrificing herself n front of us for a good long time, but it makes sense that they’d keep the original five, especially Daisy, because she was the entry character, and has consistently been the Chosen One with the hero’s journey. and presumably they find Mack less expendable than I do (I found him back on irritating form this episode). Of course, I’m sad they killed off pretty Linc, but they had to get rid of Hive (I thought his ‘real form’ was the best iteration yet) and there was little more they could ask Brett Dalton to do, so that's been a given for a while.
I am not going into the allegory.
This episode featured lots of little pay-offs for what’s been going on all season, which is always appreciated. The ending was less bonkers than in season 2 with its surfeir of cliffhangers for them to write their way out of. Rather we had just enough snippets to whet our appetites – who IS the Director? (Is it May? OR HILL?) They also seem to be planning to keep John Hannah’s entertaining, but unscrupulous scientist around for a little longer (though they clearly need to cast a tall pretty boy regular). But if season 3 involved ripping off The Martian, it looks like season 4 will be borrowing off Ex Machina. Oh, John Hannah’s character, you should go out to see films more.
I loved the moment where May was opening up to a distraught Daisy and then she got knocked out, proving that Daisy couldn’t afford to wallow in her white box. Although there could have been more May. There could always be more May.
Although I don’t think Daisy/Linc ever quite gelled as well as they could have if they’d been allowed to, I loved that he got her addiction and despite his understandable desire to cool things down, when he realised Daisy was planning to sacrifice herself to live up to the vision, Linc put himself in her place. For all that he’d said he wasn’t an agent, he did volunteer to join Coulson, and the ‘the girl I love’ moment worked nicely.
Oh, and the fight against Hive (totally living up to the Neo visual) where she was using her powers was very cool.
