[personal profile] shallowness
I have seen Ghostbusters and it was fun. (It'll be Star Trek Beyond next).

Comedy horror, especially with ghosts, isn’t the sort of film that I’d go for, but after the sexist tantrums from some manbabies on the net, one felt one had to put oneself through an entertaining movie made by funny people. Ghostbusters’ part in my childhood is that I saw either the first or the second film on video and it gave me nightmares, but I watched a 90s cartoon series, so I was familiar with it in broad strokes.

I just really appreciated that it was about four smart women, setting out to save their city. The central relationship was Erin and Abby, best friends since childhood, separated for a bit, reunited by ghost busting. McCarthy and Wiig played that dynamic, some of which I found recognisable, very believably. It was also about growing a team – Kate McKinnon was my favourite as Holzmann – so funny! So weird! I adored that the four women were the ones spouting paranormal technobabble, looking out for each other, getting things done (eventually, once they'd worked out what those things were) while the role of extremely dumb eye candy was played by Chris Hemsworth – listening to a saxophone? – and he was also funny. It is just unfortunate that, as the film went on, something about his face in those glasses reminded me of Harry Hill.

Of all the cameos, I’d love them to bring back Sigourney Weaver’s mentor to Holzmann, but the callbacks and way they handled the weight of the original film seemed pretty good. It wasn’t too scary and ghoulish for me, although I jumped a bit and didn’t like the ghouls, the distinct colouring helped. I preferred that the humour was based on silliness and weirdness than swearing (oh hi, Spy and The Heat, for all your positives). But mainly I laughed and felt refreshed because apparently only Feig, in mainstream movies, seems to be capable of showing women as they are: normal but extraordinary enough to be the heroes. And in the plural! I hope that the Ocean’s spin-off does well. I was always looking forward to it, but I was really excited when I heard that Helena Bonham-Carter and Mindy Kaling were joining the cast.
