The next few posts are likely to be me catching up on last weekend's telly.
Ah, Strictly, continuing to ride the Star Wars train, rocket...I liked the music choices of the opening number, actually. Reassuring, in that it poked fun at Claudia’s fringe, Craig and Anton (will he get to replace Len next season, given his age? Maybe he could job share with someone else judging the Latin) and did pretty much everything you expected. We had all kinds of styles of dancing. The remaining male pros are the biggest camera hogs (I love them really, even Kevin at this point in the series).
And then we were properly introduced to the celebs. Of the earliest reveals, my reaction had been ‘Who? Oh, they were performing last year...and Ed Balls’, but a few were surprises (and a lot were pretty much unknown to me). But of all the people with a Rio connection - CLAUDIA FRANGIPANI? Have you seen her floor routines? All other favourites need not apply.
Tess seemed to have won the wardrobe wars to wear black and force Claudia to wear colours. Shame the main dress Tess wore was unfinished. That length did nothing for Louise (I watched you judge So You Think You Can Dance) Redknapp, so I hope she never wears it again, while Laura Whitmore is too blonde for the canary outfit.
Anastacia and Brendan are going to be an EPIC partnership, while I can see the miscommunication VTs in the future between Irish Laura and Giovanni.
Rebecca Ferguson was wearing tinsel on her dress, probably assuming that it wouldn’t be the most bonkers outfit of the night.
I know the big takeout is meant to be that the celebs all love each other already, but it does look like quite a few of them are going to be entertaining.
We got the pro intros via the conga and once that was done, I was free to notice that Anton was basically not doing proper Latin dancing on his own, away from the main action. Heh. Jo has gone blonde, but is a regular (yay!) and so is Oti (yay! deserved).
Eee! First Claudia dressing-up gag, sold marvellously.
Greg Rutherford’s competitive streak came out in trying to prove he was the most nervous, Rinder was obviously cast to have catfights with Craig (if only Tess doesn’t get in the way being Captain Obvious Two Seconds Late) and Oti seemed...very pleased with her partner (sorry, turning into inappropriate Tessness there.) He was one of many who detailed what dance training he’s had, so is the show trying to be more transparent on that front?
Jay and Aliona returned to do the winner’s dance (presumably they were ordered to do The Jive after not doing it in the final). To me, it seemed obvious Jay hadn’t been dancing for the past few months, but it was a reminder of how he won last series in week three and a nice goodbye. It was amusing and typical that Aliona slipped in that she’d won the show twice. Oh, Strictly pros.
If I’d seen the Claudia/Claudia wordplay, of course the show did. Again, sold marvellously by the Winkelman.
In terms of the pairings, Frangipani and the surprisingly British AJ was inevitable as she is tiny and he would look like a boytoy with anyone else. (Although giving him to Leslie Joseph might also have been brilliant.) Aljaz got the tall Daisy Lowe and, predictably, Leslie and Anton were paired off, but if she had ballet training, I’m hoping she’ll be better than Carol...and Tameka is another character. Unfortuantely for her, I am already tired of Gorka = Corker.
Olly Murs auditioned for next year. Or James Bond. Or the James Bond theme. (One of those is likely to happen.)
Ore is a bit of a dish (in a David Oyewelo way), and had obviously bonded with Jo already. I can’t even with Ed Balls, so let’s not go there, and Karen got Will, who is obviously going to love every second and probably will buy into her maddest concepts. And mock her. Ha!
In the group dance, I noticed that Naga can move, but it was mainly strutting, exuberant madness, with a lot of the celebs (mainly Rinder) giving it some welly.
Two and a half weeks before the glittery madness starts good and proper.
