shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Poldark Ross/Demelza ep 4 smiling)
[personal profile] shallowness
I watched this days ago, but haven't had the chance to post this until now.

Poldark 2.2

(Contains a not very sympathetic reaction to a fictional character in serious mental distress, but I don’t think the Beeb rolled out ‘if you have been affected by any of the things portrayed in this show, please call this helpline’ either.)

Ross had a reverie of a sunlit beach with Demelza (for maximum angst, they should have had the baby there).

Demelza had an excellent cloak as she braved Bodmin again to try influencing the judge, failing to realise that Bergerac, having been on Midsummer Murders for so long, knows the law. And George came along to help make matters worse.

Gosh, I wonder if Ross’s father’s mine will turn out to be important in the future!

Caroline refused to own that she was flirting with Ennys, who cut her down for it.

Francis, of course, bungled his suicide attempt, but at least he appreciated how rude it was to use Ennys’s offer of hospitality like that. And then he decided that brandy and MOAR self-pity were the answer. Ennys was a dude for not going ‘I am tired, I’ve had a busy night and I would like some sleep before Ross’s trial.’

Ross and the lawyer had another good talk.

George pretended he hates Ross because of class. I reiterate that it is in fact because Ross is popular and George fancies him. And class a little.

At least Verity could give poor Demelza a hug.

So, the court case was quite the travesty. (I never saw Garrow’s Law. Does it come after this timeswise?) Why did it take Ross to FINALLY cross-question someone? What kind of lawyer did he have? And of course, Ross didn’t question one of the common folk who were basically lying. And Jud got called out for perjury, but did he get punished? No. In the days when you got transported for stealing loaves of bread? And by the time Ross’s lawyer had objected, I, on the basis of my extensive legal drama training, had seen about three times he could have objected before.) I know it was mainly about racking things up for Ross, but he was never going to be found guilty, so there wasn’t much real tension.

I do suddenly feel the lack of a procedural show in my viewing life, though.

Anyway, Francis was mean to his wife, George counted his chickens with his henchman (who is a little much) and Demelza knew she was pregnant again (which is quicker than I expected, but it’s not like they’ve specified how much time has passed, so I’ll let it go). All of the looks exchanged between Ross and Demelza were sweet – even though her father turned up again to be worse than humiliating.

And then Ross couldn’t suck it up and addressed a jury of his peers, who presumably were Cornishmen who had a think and agreed they would have ‘rioted’ too and never mind the English (?) judge. That's my take and I'm sticking to it.

Elizabeth seemed to push beyond Francis assuming the worst of her.

Caroline slammed Unwin, but she is presuming that Ennys would put up with her, which seems a lot at the moment.

Ross was free to return to his own people! He and Demelza needed to talk a little, but while disobedient wife/reckless husband was cute, there was no bonding over the awfulness of George (who only now thought that Ross might have cause to come after him) and Demelza made a basic error by not just saying she was pregnant, which Ross would have had to deal with, instead of trying to gauge how he might feel about it. So that’ll be fodder for the next episode then, as confirmed by ‘Next Week’.
