shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Poldark Ross/Demelza ep 4 smiling)

Poldark 1.6

In which Ross was an idiot for most of the episode, it turned out that Francis was more of a fool than we thought, Demelza showed why she was universally adored, Elizabeth made me be rude about her and Caroline was great on the one hand and confuzzling on the other, but Dwight seems quite happy with that, and there’s a part of me that wants to watch something written (originally – I know the adapter is female) by a woman. But not for ITV, although I will catch up with Victoria at some point, honest.

We finally saw one of his parents interact with Jeremy! I suppose it was easier to put Geoffrey Charles’s welfare before his because you never spent any time with your offspring, ROSS. It was right at the end, but it involved bonus Demelza singing.

The next item on my wish list is Caroline and Demelza interacting – they would have met at the engagement party that wasn’t, right?

So, Francis’s copper...was fool’s copper (heh.) (Not sorry for laughing at Francis.) And as the deadline for repaying the Warleggans approached, Ross didn’t have half enough, the mine was being a bit rubbish and Demelza was having to deal with the fact that her husband had gambled and lost and wouldn’t ask for help. All he could come up with was letting the smugglers do more on their land, which understandably she was furious about.

The dynamics of their row in the barn was amusing, in that he was left thinking ‘But I tried to reason with her instead of laying down the law. I thought she wanted that...’ Otherwise, it was more ‘oh Ross, you idiot.’

It was partly grief for Francis – most uncomplicatedly shown by Verity, mind; Geoffrey Charles seemed unaffected that his dad wasn't going to turn up and say ambiguous stuff any more – that was driving Elizabeth and Ross. But it was also liking the feeling of dependence (because her mother is awful, she can’t develop beyond the idea of the ‘lady’ I mean the whole NOT BEING ABLE TO SMILE THING vs DEMELZA’S HANDS might be unsubtle, but Elizabeth has always remained the eye-fluttering laydee who needs men for everything, and let Francis be the domestic tyrant even when it was clear he had no common sense and she pretended to resent him for it. So by the time she was talking about ‘loyalty’ to Ross while fluttering those eyelashes at a married man...GRR, shut up, Elizabeth). Yes, not knowing how firewood burns, so attractive. As attractive as pneumonia.

Ross toyed with being attracted by incompetence at life, even when people were commenting. And the whole selling his shares to buy Geoffrey Charles’s – at least, I think that's what he did. It’s not as bad as it first seemed, but the line about Demelza, miner’s daughter, being able to cope felt pretty callous. Even though it's TRUE.

Ross turned into the Man Who Hides Behind His Newspaper on Christmas Day, which feels a bit middle aged, but I tried to bear in mind that life expectancy was lower in Ye Olden Times, when George’s uncle was rude about Elizabeth’s age.

Ross redeemed himself by the end by finally realising how much Demelza has been coping – I LOVE how nearly all the characters are shipping Ross/Demelza by now. Bless you, Prudie. Demelza is too the best.

I think the fact that Demelza insisted on coming along with him to face up to the debt meant a lot, too, and gave us both of them guessing at the Mystery Benefactor, until Demelza got to the point. And they both got to triumph over the Warleggans.

And then the gift was A*, but that was a lot of taking her for granted to make up for.

I can’t tell who most of the locals who are being smugglers are, so the ‘informer’ plotline isn’t exactly gripping me.

George was incredibly calm at failing to crush Ross, really. I know he was focusing on getting Elizabeth where he wanted her – although he must be the only character who hadn’t noticed how often Ross was popping over to Trenwith, although I still maintain the source of his obsession with Elizabeth is partly because she used to be Ross’s. Masterful use of all the weapons at his disposal. Will it come to anything?

Great Aunt Portent has made all sorts of promises about crushing George, but she needs to do more than whisper about him disaparagingly in Geoffrey Charles’s ear.

I still think Caroline is badly written, even if we’re seeing her at a stage of metamorphosis. Can she live on £6,000? I like that she’s legitimately pondering whether Ennis would compensate for the loss of wealth she's been bought up to prize. I also like that the show didn’t bang on about how she knew she needed her uncle’s consent for her marriage or she’d lose the money and how that coloured her first conversation with Dwight, when we had to have a whole flashback about Ross and Demelza’s benefactor. It had been obvious all episode that she was rich and could help them more easily than anyone Demelza kept mentioning.
