[personal profile] shallowness
Strictly – Saturday

Danny got a chance to redeem himself immediately after his weakest performance…with a jive. How would it compare with Ore’s bar-setter? Well, it seemed like a clean performance, with no mistakes. It was stylish, but didn’t seem quite as full on content-wise as Ore’s jive (have I got sucked into the show’s canonical version of events? I was pleased it was marked a little lower while simultaneously being delighted for them that they got tens. Also that colour was a win for Oti.) Oh, and Danny seemed a little hunched at times.

Daisy got the no-hoper slot after being in the dance-off again. I hope no-one told her that’s what it is, because she doesn’t deserve it dancing-wise, and needs a confidence boost for herself, and an apparent improvement or breakthrough with the voting public. What the judges called quirky made me think I needed to revisit Pixie and Trent’s VW [I did tonight, and nope, I hadn’t imagined it and then I got into a bit of a rabbit hole, ending with their paso – so that was fun], but at least it added something to the mix and a straightforward VWt and then might not have been enough. I thought I did see some skippy bits too, but there’s such a nice quality about her dancing. The fact that that’s her best score shows how she’d plateaued, if not wobbled, after a strong opening. I want her safe, but not enough to vote for her. And as I’m commenting on the outfits, who would wear that when they went down to the market?

Ore was next, reflecting how the order had changed last week. It’s a reflection of the general quality too, of course. I thought there were some really good bits to his salsa, but the judges liked it more than me. I think the extensions to Jo’s hair and skirt didn’t help with making the lifts look as good as the judges said they were (though they too had colour, a couple too many in Jo’s case). I suppose I like to feel more drawn in to a salsa than I did here.

Ed did indeed do a recognisable quickstep and the proper dancing in it was quite respectable, if not in the same league as everyone else. I was underwhelmed by his performancing, while I thought Katya was amazing throughout and her choreographic choices weren’t bad ones.

Laura did a good job with a tough dance. I agree that there was a little too much Giovanni, and even before he hogged the limelight, by dancing full out, he made her look worse than she was. I’m also going to go with the idea that the speed affected her technique negatively. Their VT was the best because…Joan Collins. Bruno remains their biggest fan.

Judge Rinder used the phrase ‘butch moth’. Oksana won the night costume-wise. I loved the art deco touches to a classic style and I liked her dealing with his perfectionism in the VT. This was one of those infectiously happy quicksteps, mainly done with no faff, a real lightness, though one or two blips on the footwork and posture. Darcy is his biggest fan, but I really did like his delight at the marks showing he was improving.

Louise got the honour and the challenge of doing the first Argentine Tango of the season. Even though I too got sucked into the narrative of the VT, i.e. of her showing Her Serious Side, it was such a strong dance, and with the high degree of difficulty, an impressive one. Equalling Ore’s score, even if I don’t think it had quite the actual impact of his jive, is fair enough.

After Tess misrepresented what happened with Greg last week, we got to see his cute (and energetic) son, but there was no need for such tactics, the Viennese Waltz was good. I did wonder how they were going to go from the opening business to the rotation, but the answer was well, and he was strong throughout in a good way.

Claudia got to close after doing so well last week and having a dramatic dance. The judges didn’t love it, but I was with the standing audience, not literally standing, but certainly disagreeing with Len about AJ’s overpowering her. I thought she stood up to him and didn’t let the height difference matter. Sure, it wasn’t one for the ages, but it captured the flavour of the dance and of the people who were in the lower half, she’d done the most to make me want to vote for her. (So I did.) As for costumes, hot pink and poppy red do not go together.

So, like every week for a while, Ed should be in the bottom two, even though he’s improving. Daisy and Laura are still vulnerable because of past events, and Laura copped to a mistake, but she had a tough dance. Ore and Claudia were not as good as they could have been, certainly in terms of marks. Danny, Daisy and Greg had comebacks and Danny got a breakthrough with his first ten. Judge Rinder improved and Louise had a breakthrough. Which is to say it’s hard to call who will be in the dance-off. Can I call the judges (especially Darcy) being shocked and outraged? Oh, and Len’s Lens will probably let us in on Ore and Darcy’s conversation before he started dancing properly.

Strictly results show
Fun opening number, giving Oti the starring role and partnering her with a handkerchief, Neil and Anton, but I’m not going to make a joke about that.

Claudia W might wish to venture towards colours again. It’s been a while.

By emphasising that so many couples had had their best marks yet, Tess set the scene for a ‘shock’ result. In hindsight, Laura kept banging on about the mistake.

I can’t begrudge Daisy’s delight, as I shared in a tiny portion of it, or people saving Greg, although Natalie, whom I like, was a bit OTT in her response. But poor Ore.

I loved the production of Barlow’s song, although the floor dancing probably worked way better on screen than in the room. But by having a choir of more mature ladies (related to what the show the song is from is about?) instead of a gospel choir, picking when to bring them and the dancers in to add more interest than Gary Barlow at a piano could provide, not to mention the well-pitched choreography, it was really accomplished.

Len’s Lens didn’t feature an explanation of the conversation as Ore wasn’t safe.

As soon as Ed was safe, it had to be Laura. Again.

Louise came off well in the Clauditorium with her stuff about whispering ‘I’m awesome’, while Claudia F tumbled (sorry) off the expected contestant script, but I think she was in shock after the experience of being the last one to know she was safe.

I thought one of Ore’s lifts didn’t look as good as it had the first time around, while Laura didn’t appear to have made a mistake, but Giovanni’s showboating and not showing off the celeb seemed even more egregious this time around.
