Poldark 1.10
Things were going great at the mine, but not so much at Neparra or Trenwith. I thought Demelza nailed it when she observed that Ross was trying to be the Big Man, while not dealing with breaking their marriage. So, he toyed with the idea of being a soldier, because war was a-calling, and Dwight, at least, had nothing to keep him at home (thanks to Caroline’s uncle Bergerac's very loose definition of ‘engaged').
I’m glad Verity didn’t know precisely what Ross had done, given everything, but as Ross and Demelza were stuck (wait, was this after the fight where Demelza told him she’d nearly cheated too and he got all mad and ‘IT’S NOT THE SAME. I WAS DEVOTED TO MY FIRST LOVE. MCMOUSTACHE IS NOTHING.’ And the viewing public and Demelza were unimpressed. I mean, it’s not the same, but both would have been chearing and Ross was still thinking what he’d done wasn’t that bad, or something.) She wasn't forgiving Ross (because he didn't apologise) and she needed to move on somehow.
Anyway, Ross was spoiling for a fight with George, who is being appaling over Geoffrey Charles, but only Elizabeth was surprised, so of course ‘your scullery maid’ was excuse enough. And the viewing public and Demelza were unimpressed. I mean, George’s claim that he’d injured Ross worse was both true and funny, because Ross nearly burned him/killed him before the heavies came in, but was more badly injured. But we all knew the fighting lessons hadn't helped much.
Demelza was magnificent in going back to Trenwith to plead for Agatha (don’t bother as far as I'm concerned) and Geoffrey Charles (do bother). She showed up George and Elizabeth and had a wonderful line about the scullery, went into the fray to try to get everyone to calm down, despite the fire – I mean, the rioters wouldn’t have harmed her on purpose, and were, again trying to fight her cause/using her injury as the kindling for their rage, but still, fire glinting off copper hair, as Elizabeth did the ladylike thing of watching, passively, and George got his paid posse and guns… No wonder shooting Demelza caused a riot.
And though that was a big scene and I appreciated Ross’s return and gesture for her to come on the horse, I appreciated that it wasn’t enough to stop her leaving, because it was all in keeping with him still missing the point.
If TANKARD is saying ‘hold on, is this wise?’ about your tyrannical enclosing of Poldark land, you might want to think again, George, you overcompensating pustule. At the same time, amid all the drama and Demelza pain, it was sweet that, whenever he crowed around Ross or Demelza, he was oblivious to the undercurrents between them and Elizabeth. Well, the latest undercurrents.
Obviously, his plan is to run from the (common) neighbours to London after letting loose a guard who was having far too much fun with his gun. Surely hanging for trespassing is a bit much.
But shooting Demelza? Way to cause a riot,
I could rip into Elizabeth for several paragraphs, but basically the noose she’d stepped into (out of pique and general wetness) tightened around her in her second marriage so much that even she noticed it. Demelza obviously came out of their encounter on the higher ground.
Perhaps what Ross and Elizabeth have in common is secretly being ostriches because an elderly spinster shouldn't be needing to tell a married woman that her baby might be Ross’s bastard. But then, I was raising my eyebrows at Elizabeth delaying her marriage by a month last episode.
Speaking of, Caroline, you weren’t properly married to Dwight either. (The irony being that, as I finally realised, the actress was pregnant and they tried to hide it with the filming.) Ross tried and successded in bringing them back together, not so much in gratitude for Caroline’s loan (bad lawyer) or to heal Dwight’s broken heart, but to prove that he could help a class-leaping love affair/realising out loud what really mattered. It was, as Ross acknowledged, Demelza-level meddling.
I don’t know if Caroline is really up for being a poor doctor’s wife, or worse, now, a Navy surgeon. We sort of skipped over her months of misery, but not so much Dwight's, so, yay for love matches.
Anyway, back to Ross the ostrich, still waffling on about Trenwith and George and Geoffrey Charles, puffed up because he'd called off the mob and Done A Gesture, and not noticing the serious packing going around him – Demelza having decided that the only way she’d move on was to move away. Verity had dropped an anvil about the heart wanting what the heart wanted, but while Caroline needed to make amends with Dwight, Demelza was the wronged party, so while I wanted them to work it out, Ross needed to do more. Thank goodness Ross got it through his thick skull that Demelza was leaving (to stay with her unloving father – and taking Jeremy, but let’s not pretend Ross cared about that, he mentioned Geoffrey Chares eleventy times more than his own son) and put together what he’d failed to up till then.
I mean, the general verdict is that he should fall down at Demelza’s feet, right? But he did admit to spectacular arrogance. It wasn't the best apology, as he called his feelings for Elizabeth ‘perfect love’ (or holding on to a deluded, idealised, grass-is-greener fancy of youth, ignoring that she’s feeble and disloyal and nobody else gets why you'd prefer that over Our Heroine), but it was good enough to get Demelza to stay.
We got some proper staring out to sea together, with significant warships looming, and I think it was on The Bye-Bye Julia Cliff. Just a snog, though – no bedroom action for either of the main couples. Why couldn't Demelza get some comfort after the hurt? Granted, if Ross had found out about the gunshot wound, it would have messed up the plot.
There were several stunning, gorgeously shot scenes. I’ve been banging on about the storylines so much, but haven’t mentioned the visuals for a while. WHERE ARE THE SEASON 2 ICONS? It hasn't felt right to use season 1 icons for weeks.
And then we had a trailer for the already filmed third season.
