shallownessI watched quite a bit of Children in Need last night, I usually don't, and was reminded of the reasons why last night, but I was dipping in and out of doing other stuff too. Mainly I wanted to catch the Strictly bit and the Fantastic Beasts-adjacent sketch. For the latter, Tess Daly and Greg James were doing a joke about which house Greg belonged to. As Tess sank a line where she was supposed to make out that being in Hufflepuff was a dis, I realised she's a Squib, isn't she.
Moving on, I'll try to be nicer. I'd seen who the Strictly Olympian contestants were on It Takes Two, and based on their sporting disciplines (rowing, kayaking, hockey and TAEKWONDO) I rightly guessed who would win. In fairness, he was the best generally, even without the taekwondo leap (clearly a taekwondo practitioner should be on next year's Strictly along with Olly Murs and Tony Robinson). The taller woman (rowing) started off well, but in the spotlight section, the shorter woman (hockey) was better. The kayaker was strong. Anyway, as the taekwondo guy had only got a silver in Rio, whereas the others got gold, there was that narrative. And his celebration made partner Karen seem restrained. That's Karen Clifton, folks. Although, in fairness, the subplot was that of the pros - Pasha, disengaged, Janette, getting flung around, Neil, happy to be there and Karen, you felt that the latter deserved the win seeing as Will walked away from the show.
The Fantastic Beasts promo/tie-in, involved Eddie Redmayne as 'Eddie Redmayne' stuttering over the phone trying to get hold of Pudsey but being foiled by Mel and Sue, who joked about being sacked from their last job and now being on the BBC swtichboard and accidentally connecting him to all sorts. Jamie Dornan got a big cheer. I was a bit confused about when they'd have filmed it because of the Bake Off references. Maybe the Redmayne, Berry and Hollywood stuff was filmed before the Mel and Sue stuff. Anyway, point being, I do hope to go and see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but I didn't feel obliged to go and see it on the first weekend as with Doctor Strange and Arrival...or past Harry Potter films.
