shallowness: Fred and Ginger dancing in foregroud, him in tails, her in a dark gown, background a white circle (moon or spotlight) (Fred and Ginger dancing)
[personal profile] shallowness
Saturday's show

Niiiice opening number, with all the ladies in a variation on Oksana’s art deco white dress, and the 40s take on ‘Singular Sensation’ (although what would Jason Gilkis do if he was banned from homages to Astaire?). Danny was able to match the pros, I felt, and Louise got more difficult material than Claudia F.

Enter Claudia W in navy (not a colour) and Tess in red, but once again Darcey won on the gorgeous gown front. May that comfort her as Len grabbed her leg again.

Claudia F’s jive was good stuff. I was impressed by her dancing with a second pro and her solo work. The routine was an indication of the demands being made of the extra dancers, who earned their keep, but of course everyone went big for the Blackpool dance floor. The show has definitely picked up the ‘when will she get a 10?’ narrative, especially AJ and his jacket, which tempted fate. But the fact that Craig clearly considered the 10 paddle showed he was in a good mood, but the mistake they all saw pretty much guaranteed her all 9s.

Peter Kay gave Claudia W all sorts of hysterics, and overran the allocated music.

Ore’s Viennese Waltz didn’t get me in my gut, although I appreciated that Jo went for a story and used Ore’s showmanship to pull off a Frank Sinatraesque persona to add something to the routine. And it was good and impressive, certainly. But based on what he’d said in judging Ore and Claudia, Craig was right to give him an 8, while the others thought the merits outweighed the flaws.

Louise had the pressure of a paso with Kevin at you know where. What a train! I didn’t like the pattern on her dress and less decoration would have been better for Kevin too. In a word: dramatic. She showed off her suppleness, and was good, although I’ve not connected with her dances and didn’t here.

Danny’s Charleston, however...! So impressive. If I’m picky, I would have liked a few more quirky touches to the choreography, because it felt pretty stylish, but I was cheering him on. And from the comments, I had hopes of the fabled 10 from Craig – I can’t fault Darcey’s reaction, because mine was much bigger.

I was a bit shocked by the running order, frontloading the best four dancers? I’d presumed then that they’d put Ed last, but closing with the salsa made sense – although any of the top three would have been a showstopper in terms of quality.

So, I was impressed by the fire in Ed's entrance, and then bemused by what looked like Irish dancing in a jive. There were longeurs, although there was good use of the extra dancers, one ‘oh, Katya’ moment. And yes, he’s improved and his attitude is commendable, but COME ON. No.

I thought Greg had a few sticky bits in his quickstep and he certainly wasn’t smiling throughout so her probably had the weakest night.

Judge Rinder played the game of what we expect from our contestants in the VT badly. Yes, I’d be grumpy if I had to have anything to do with the Spice Girls, and yes, the link between worrying about lifts and a very high ride is tenuous, but most of the VTs were equally bad and others have managed to get through them good-naturedly while making it clear they know it's terrible. Oksana laughing at him nearly covered it. I thought his salsa was mostly pretty good, but he was never going to get 9s from judges who’d criticised his timing – but at least Darcey’s crush on him continues unabated.

Danny’s routine was my favourite, I think, and I was delighted that he got the full house. Deservedly so. Because she didn’t get a 10 (deservedly so) but was miles better than the bottom three, I voted for Claudia – I liked their routine more than Ore and Louise’s dances.

Ed should be in the dance-off (and if the horrid threat of him making it through to the final comes through, I will just vote for whoever’s up against him) but I wouldn’t be surprised if Greg and Judge Rinder were in the dance-off. [Written on Saturday night.]

Strictly results

Good enough opening number, but what followed didn’t live up to it. Claudia’s Blackpool paraphanelia was fun until she started talking about people leaving, and it was only much later that I realised that Tess’s skirt was sheer and that Claudia’s hair was a bit of a mess.

A quick recap and then Danny and Ore were safe – of course, but Claudia F, middle of the table, but one mistake away from a full house (but not a certain white middle-class man who is willing to do all sorts of antics) wasn’t.

So, I’m basically very cross about that. And indeed, was worrying for Louise. I know I’m quick to get irked about the weak comedy contestant being kept in too long every year, but in 2016, I’m really not in the mood for this.

Simple Minds – many of whom seemed to be going for the metallics on black look that I find I don’t like after most of the examples paraded on display on the shows – performed, but there were no dancers, which HELLO.

Bruno got shut out of Len’s Lens this time, to give us Darcey talking (and making herself look silly for giving Ore a 10?) and reacting to Craig’s scoring.

Rick Astley, sporting boot-polish black hair, did have the decency to have some dancers on.

Ed was called safe and Greg wasn’t. We had some faffing from the judges, which ignored the fact that Greg was second bottom and had made several mistakes, and so probably deserved to be there. He was always going to go in that dance-off – I thought they both improved, although he had more room to do so, and of course Claudia F is used to repetitions of her routines.

Both he and Natalie got emotional and Tess was intentionally funny. From the other celebs’ comments, Greg seems like a nice guy and the gallery must be tired of Ed too, because they ave him a coment lacking in self awareness.

And then in ‘good grief, what?’/appalling news, Gorka was assaulted whilst in Blackpool. !?!? I waited to watch ITT before posting this and they didn't try to mention it at all for whatever reason. Greg stepped in Ed's defence and told people to get off his case. I'm not on his case! I'm on the case of the people voting him safe.
