shallowness: Margaret Hale of North and South adaptation sitting at desk writing (Margaret North and South writing)
[personal profile] shallowness
I half-intended to post a long overdue linkspam yesterday afternoon, but got sucked into watching a repeat of the final parts of the 1983 adaptation of Mansfield Park. I'd seen parts of it the week before. I appreciate that it was more faithful than more recent adaptations have been. I can't stand it if they deviate too much from book!Fanny, and Jane Austen has the best lines as oh, Mary Crawford, Mrs Norris and pretty much everyone talks and talks, convinced of their own rightness, which a good screenwriter should appreciate.

I loved Lady Bertram and her barely there voice. Although the actress playing Mary Crawford was good and looked like she could be related to the actor playing Henry, a young Samantha Bond was playing Mariah, and because I know what she can do, I was longing to see her Mary Crawford. Everyone else was fine, if acting in a 1983 style. The blocking and lighting were not always okay.

I spent most of the time Edmund was on screen wishing he'd do something about his hair, but the actor did convey a more passionate young man than I give Edmund credit for being usually. And there was one scene where he was talking and Fanny was gazing and gazing at him all anime heart eyes and he was oblivious - a key moment. I missed the encounter where Sir Thomas tries to talk Fanny into marrying Henry and was interrupted when Edmund comes to take Fanny from Portsmouth. Grr. I was watching it on Drama, where the adverts go on forever, leaving one to ponder the cheek of claiming Spooks is a crime drama, why not interrupt me then?

ETA: The ending was a bit limp. For once, I wanted them to extend the montage.
