First, I now own Arrested Development on DVD (yay! I have watched all three seasons on borrowed DVDs, but given that the fourth season will soon appear, I decided I'd take advantage of Christmas generosity this way.)
Second, I've just caught up on Miranda. Here are my thoughts on series 3 so far.
3.01 It was panning
A year on (of course it would be because of Christmas), and Miranda/Gary were ‘friends’ on the brink of returning to what looked like a disaster movie (and be the best thing for them). WORSE the shop was on the brink of being repossessed, Stevie was not working for Miranda or being her best friend...
(They couldn’t afford/get Tom Conti.)
Although I laughed, I did think the first half was treading water a bit with catchphrases and a couple of set-ups that are overly familiar from ads, for goodness’s sale. I can see where the accusations of self-loathing were coming from, what with ‘fat’ being the main theme.
But then came Miranda running into Stevie, the choir and the superb interview. And suddenly I remembered the daft hats of the opening scene, 1991 - ‘but that just happened’ – and Penny’s solidarity with Miranda extending to a daft exit. More daftness and pratfalls, please!
3.02 What a Surprise
Why does Miranda shoving Stevie never get old?
I wondered if the reporter guy would be back, although, well, perhaps we’ll meet his parents and that will explain why he stayed around, although Miranda’s spur of the moment lies weren’t as bad as usual – saving that for Gary’s tiny new girlfriend. Penny’s policies were so her and hilarious, and the farce and the silliness was just the right side of funny/cringe walky (adopting!) A better episode.
3.03 The Dinner Party
Patricia Hodge WINS. Again, it was nice to see mama bear Penny given how blunt she generally is about Miranda's failing.
I realised who Mike’s father would be a breath before the reveal. Mike’s earnest speech (he IS too earnest and he hasn’t really seen Miranda at her most full on) was only worth it for Gary’s face (but after Hong Kong, he deserves punishment AND for not sussing that that was not Miranda’s cooking. Interesting that the girlfriend was allowed to be in on the group things. Interesting, but probably futile judging from the audience's responses.)
You would have to be desperate to leave your child with Miranda – what did happen to it (him, whatever) as she got her back done in?
I thought this after the first two series, but even more so after the last ep - I could stand to read an analysis of how Miranda is in the lineage of Bridget Jones - it's not the only obvious influend, of course, but still. And it's proof that the comedy of failing to be a competent modern sophisticated woman isn't mined nearly enough. And not honestly enough either.
