4.14 The Man behind the SHIELD

Before getting caught up in the ‘they’re all robots!/how does Jemma know Fitz isn’t one because he was all alone for some time?/are we going to watch robot Coulson and May make out because I don’t know how I feel about that?/does robot Daisy have Quake’s powers?’ twist, there’s a bit to get through.

I had forgotten that the Framework was Fitz’s idea originally, so, thanks for reminding me, show, but of course Aida ran with it. (I still want the episode set inside The Framework, especially if Radcliffe is hanging out there, it’s the only place where Agnes now exists and because we’re not getting enough actual May.) It felt like this was another episode where it’s All About Fitz and Simmons was stuffed into supportive girlfriend mode for most of it. Hopefully she’ll have equal stuff to do in dealing with the new development.

Even though I agree with him in principle, I found Mack really self-righteous and judgmental when it came to Fitz inventing everything that ever turned evil this season, or having a hand in it. It is way more Radcliffe’s fault than Fitz’s.

The show was basically mocking Ivanov/the Superior for being a subpar Bond villain and giving him all the rope with his epic conspiracy theories. I was wondering who would get to beat him up. I’m glad it was Daisy in the end. Mace also got beaten up – I would have prioritised May over him, because I spent most of his scenes thinking of him as an inferior Steve Rogers.

I would dearly like a fic where Coulson tries that Russian on Natasha.

The flashback was mostly delightful (a leetle try-hard?) with smiley!happy!May – and I thought Gregg did something to his voice to suggest a younger Coulson. And their banter was so flirty! So, protecting Coulson has been in May for ages. I was glad that they clarified that ‘Some Time Ago’ was just after Andrew had come on the scene, because Coulson/May seemed to be coming to the boil.

It was funny that we never knew what they were meant to be retrieving – I’d like it to remain a McGuffin, because that scene where Coulson said he didn’t remember made Ivanov even more preposterous, and that Coulson repeated the blustering tactic until Quake turned up, although he has got better at it.

And then the twist that the show is not done with making the regulars play robots and turned Coulson, Daisy and Mack into ones. Well, I think the paranoia aspect should be fun. It wasn’t quite the way that I saw Aida’s revenge over Ivanov developing, because she does seem to have opinions and some autonomy from Radcliffe, even within his programming for her, although I assume this was always Aida and Radcliffe’s plan. It was always obvious the black hats had a plan, it just seemed to be Ivanov’s. Poor robot, though, I don’t think Radcliffe (is he hanging with Agnes?) has noticed the necklace.

And what are they up to? Is it just hampering/bringing down SHIELD? Because as I start to think through the implications of reactivating robot May, her mission of getting the Darkhold is done. It was certainly a good reveal, although when Simmons started blethering about lost time, it was hard to follow – I had thought they ought to be more suspicious of the comms going down, but I didn’t suspect this. So, FitzSimmons will have to come up with something (weaponry?) to stop the robots. They have Mace, and, you’d think more usefully, Yo-Yo. But they’re up against four robots that SHIELD security still can’t recognise.
