I watched a fair chunk of the Eurovision song contest last night, from Armenia to Cyprus, which is more than I've done for a while. I used to love it, but it got too big and thus too gruelling. I have caught glimpses of it since last posting in 2012 but gone are the days when I could sit through all the performances and the voting.
Some thoughts, Armenia and Italy had a weird Indian theme going. Some things made me laugh - not the hosts, I basically muted their bits - but Croatia's number where this one guy channeled Two-Face and sang one bit like a high-pitched pop singer and the other like an opera singer, and it may have made me yelp in delight. Australia is still in it then, taking pressure off the other 'are you sure that's in Europe?' nations. It shouldn't be - what if it won? But I thought their singer could be a legitimate pop star. I thought Lucie Jones of the village with the name Graham Norton butchered sang really well, and she should be emoting away on the West End.
And I was one of those who fell for the charms of Portugal's song - no idea what it was about, but I loved the mood it created, so I'm pleased for the singer and his sister who wrote the song and the country.
