shallownessStrike – The Silkworm part 1
I had forgotten what the opening scene (which lived up to the ‘disturbing’ warning) had to do with the story. It was later revealed that it was the former Mrs Fancourt.
Monica Dolan was excellent casting as Leonora Quine, and you could totally tell why Cormoran wanted to help her, because in so many ways, she didn’t help herself. I am also, as always, delighted that Jeremy Swift is in it, even in flashback and I had to look up where I knew the actor playing Fancourt from (The Hour).
The state of Owen’s body was visually disgusting (although in one way, the scene where Cormoran was like ‘this picture is disturbing’, Robin was toughing it out, thinking of the manuscript, handing it to Cormoran and then picking up Matthew’s call and finding out about another, more emotionally resonant death was hysterical if you thought about it a certain way. It wasn’t encouraged by the way they played it, but there was a lot going on in that scene.
I thought the way they handled conveying Bombyx Mori – Quine’s manuscript, with woozy visuals that gave you just enough to work out what was going on and highlighting the text (plus Burke’s reaction shots) was just enough.w
They have threaded the big clue as to whodunit throughout every scene the killer appeared in.
We had the Cormoran meets Matthew scene, and never the twain shall meet. Once again, Robin got a billion times more emotional over her job than over Matthew, even in his genuine distress over his mother. I am trying to sit on the shipper in me who is all ‘look at the guy who would enable you to do what you love’ (setting aside that he’s her boss) and concentrate on wishing she had someone in her life to tell her she doesn’t have to marry Matthew.
And as he was invited to the wedding, Cormoran had to deal with Charlotte’s engagement.
We got Robin the Stig, the amusingly moody manservant, a Devon/Cornwall joke and Dodo was genuinely heartbreaking – her father’s been killed and her mother is being taken away from her. Cormoran 1 – the cops 0 (as is the way in a PI story).
Next episode, Robin and Cormoran dress up to go to a party together. Also they investigate the murder some more, but, priorities, priorities.
