shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Kensi and Deeks partners NCIS LA)
[personal profile] shallowness
NCIS: LA 4.12 Paper Soldiers

This episode was so much about Hetty messing with everyone’s minds, but mainly Nate, Granger and Sam. It didn’t always hold together – why is she so agin’ Nate/Rose? And how come she was suspicious of Rose so early? Yes, I know we are meant to bow down to the Hettyness of it all, but it doesn’t make sense.

On the other hand, Hetty as the grieving widow, playing around with ‘Felix’ (even if I find wearing a dead fox around your neck gross) and the absurdity of her as Nate’s mother and how she was trying to break his composure, not to mention that Linda Hunt was having a ball – a treat. And I also liked that we got an explanation for why the Marines hadn’t been forthcoming about how the lieutenant died, which was what had set his widow off, not the discovery of the tissue donation.

I missed the opening tag, so for me the show started with epic bantz about Kensi’s bad mood, skipped through her plant-killing tendencies to everyone rightly mocking Eric’s mime. Lots of ‘oh, Eric, no’ as he blabbed to Nate about kissing Nell and why – I recall seeing a scene in a previous episode where Nate accused Nell of trying to make Eric jealous about him and her, so I assume there’s history, but I think that my gaps in the show’s history didn’t help with this episode. A vindictive part of me was pleased that Nell then proceeded to eat food that would put off Eric. It was what he deserved.

I know they seeded Nate/Rose a few episodes ago, but it seemed odd that so much attention was given to supporting characters, especially since their burgeoning romance went off the rails, although I suppose it tied into ‘This is the price we pay as agents’. Her reaction at being interrogated and her privacy invaded rang out loudly, and the sense of betrayal by Nate.

On the other hand, Kensi was pretty plaintive about having to investigate their friend (colleague, surely? Or have Kensi, Nell and Rose gone out on a girls’ night and if so why has that not been shown? Was that the tag I didn’t see? Because I presumed it was someone finding the dead PI.)

‘Kenzinella’ or whatever it was was beautiful, I am just saying.

Callen had some nice moments, e.g. playing Nate, and he was the best dressed man not in uniform at the funeral. And for all the fun Sam had ‘undercover’, playing off Hetty, you just knew he was going to pay for it.

I also liked the funeral director and his assistant. In another show, they would have turned out to be robots. Here, he, at least, turned out to be a baddie.
