shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (DS9 Kira Nerys)
[personal profile] shallowness
Gave Electric Dreams, The Impossible Planet a try. Out of the cut: stupid episode. I kept expecting some kind of twist to bring it together, but no, it was all blah blah blah mysteries of the heart and shared delusion because of oxygen deprivation that. Because a woman thinking she is her grandmother and this bloke she’s met is her grandfather and him having the same shared dream…might work better on the page. I was sort of expecting the romance, and Barbara was ghastly, so there was a vindictive pleasure in her being dumped for an old lady, but she was one of a dozen examples of the datedness of the story. She was a lady who lunched, which made her seem like a parasite to me.

And the look of it? I loved the passengers and they clearly spent most of the budget on the space shots, but it would have worked better if the interior of the ship had committed to the 50s look, including the back office parts. As it was, most of the tech there looked modern day, making the robot look absurd and the cultural assumptions even more jarring. It’s the future, Jim, but as imagined in the mid twentieth century!

They also needed to think through the ‘deafness’ much more. Was Irma Grant completely deaf or not? Why didn’t the robot translate into sign language (of some variety) for her? Why not make more of lip reading? I was expecting the reveal to be that she’d heard everything. (As it was, the text to speech device looked like something that was on the market just before smartphones.)

Some interesting ideas – Earth being destroyed and humanity so far removed from it that it only mattered to a three hundred year old, (although, really, as if she or the robot wouldn’t have researched a little harder); the fakery of the experience people were being sold on the Dream Weaver (apply filter? yes) but there were so many stupid holes. It was stupid, and in the absence of the twist (from the robot or the old lady knowing everything, and them yanking ‘the young man’s’ chain, I was making ‘he’s a replicant’ or ‘was your father’s name Flash?’ jokes.

I'm not sure how seriously I mean this, but what if they'd made this animated, and drawn it in a Jetsons-esque style?
