shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Wanda Infinity War)
[personal profile] shallowness
I caught up with Timeless 2.7 Mrs Sherlock Holmes

I don’t know that much about what happened in the struggle for votes for women in the US. So, I was looking forward to seeing that depicted.

I thought the fight between Rufus and Jiya felt real in a good way – neither had answers to their situation, which is as unique as the main couple’s.

One moment during the awkwardness from Lucy directed towards Flynn suggested to me they’d done it the night before. Of course Wyatt saw her sneaking out, and Flynn needled him amusingly thereafter. Lucy’s right to choose tying in with the theme (as discussed before, I think Flynn is a bad choice for her, but her choices are limited).

Nicholas made it clear he wanted Emma. Would that be enough for Emma to give up what she loves to do (and the vote?) Turns out it wasn’t, but her rationale wasn’t what I was expecting.

Flynn and Rufus were very entertaining – Rufus’s ‘I am invincible’ routine was obviously flawed. (Hai there, police brutality.)

Grace, well, you could see why she was called Mrs Sherlock Holmes, and watching her made me return to longing for a gender-flipped take on the character. I thought it was interesting that she was A Remarkable Woman and how that affected her take on the suffragist movement.

Cue the usual fake names (at least Flynn got a running European names gag) and the fangirling (of Alice Paul), and how strikingly anti-women the setting was. But great clothes – I loved Grace’s coat and Matt Lanter looked exceptionally good in his suit.

Er, I loved Lucy calling Grace out on her attitude towards other women as A Remarkable Woman and I was right there with Lucy when she called Wyatt out for acting like a petulant little child over them. (Did he catch the man assume Flynn was her husband?) Of course, because of when we’ve come into his life (and possibly because one may have been reading soulmark AU) the ‘love of your life’ line rang out loud and clear.

I had thought Lucy would have to give the speech, but the show remembered that Alice had done more than give it, but organised the movement, and so, just as it was Grace who outwitted the sleeper agent, it was Grace who gave a speech that only she could have given (and I loved that it was influenced by what Lucy and Wyatt had said.) So, the opening scene was what happened in Lucy’s pre-jump timeline then.

Har har at the suggestion that The Donald was not meant to win in the pre-jump/prime timeline – and which timeline would the latter be anyway? (A good point, which rubbishes a few of my theories.)

The suspicious photo conveniently appeared – we knew Rittenhouse had kept Jessica alive already to throw the team off, so I refuse to believe she’s a sleeper agent until we get more proof. Don’t get me wrong, I think Wyatt has to get to terms with the fact that he’s changed, she isn’t ‘his’ Jessica and move on to and with Lucy, but I don’t want them to make it too easy, because I thought they handled the Wyatt/Lucy well, from the choreography of the stairs, to him opening his eyes to look at her mid-kiss, to the conversation, which went more maturely than Wyatt’s previous behaviour had predicated. But, in fairness, he was giving the id too much free reign, enabled by Flynn. (As the episode went on, it should have become obvious nothing non-platonic happened between Lucy and Flynn.)

I doubt that Emma is going to put up with the box Nicholas is trying to put her in for long, although it kept her blameless for the failure of the mission. Thing is, of course, he isn’t all of Rittenhouse, just its current visionary.

I thought this was a good episode, with just enough twists – the scene with Lucy, Emma, Grace and the sleeper was satisfying and showed attention to detail. (Arguably, also bias against left-handed people, because there were more than 10 people in the room, so I argue that it’s statistically improbable that it was just the sleeper who stuck her hand up.)

I watched Agents of SHIELD 5.12 Principia live.

Fitz was the grumpiest grump (apart from one scene with Jemma) considering he’d just got married. I know he had a lot on his plate, but, come on, laddie.

Deke was made more sympathetic, most of all because of the scene with the vision of his mother, but I think they overdid infantilising him. Grumpy (unknowing) grandad Fitz underestimating him didn’t need to be forced on us so much. It was a pity that it was Deke that figured the relationship out, although I’ll grant them that it gives him a boost in a world where he’s usually on the back foot, and I liked that it was through the matrilineal side. I thought Simmons might have noticed from the thinking with my hands on my back pose, except the actor playing Deke looked so unnatural doing it. I want to say they should have seeded that earlier, but am willing to admit it’s quite possible they did, because a lot of references to past characters proved that I have not retained all the AoS info e.g. embarrassingly and ironically, I did not recall Vernon/Alex.

He was unpleasant, was my first thought, then dismay that everyone wanted to keep him around. Because UNPLEASANT. I kind of hoped Ruby would turn on him (she’s…she pouts a lot, she seems like someone’s animated Lolita fantasy brought to life, it’s really disconcerting) although she seems to be focused on the real enemy, her mother, who is becoming more and more of a stock villain. Throw in the muscular guy I still don’t care about, and apart from Ruby’s weapon and someone avenging Yo-Yo’s injury - quite possibly her, thanks to robot arms - I’m underwhelmed by what they’re building up. Seriously, I want Kasius’s dad to turn up.

I was also very underwhelmed by the Candyman and his American teeth. And stop trying to make Mack’s weapon a thing, show.

I did laugh very loudly at Coulson’s ‘you can’t touch this’.

Yo-Yo’s distress at the loss of her arms was sympathetic. I love Simmons, but I don’t know if she truly has the power to get Yo-Yo over that and her gloomy belief that they can’t change the timeline just like that.

Dear Phil, you know how you ignored Daisy’s wishes in the future? She and Melinda will now proceed to ignore yours. It’s two against one. Love, schadenfreude. (Although the line about him being their shield was beyond clunky.)

Little moments like the team being jaded at seeing a ship floating in the sky aside, the big action was meh.
