shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Rogue X-Men Films)

Although I would prefer to be watching it at 9pm on a Wednesday, I'm quite enjoying catching up with Timeless over breakfast on a Saturday.

Timeless 2.10 Chinatown

It only occurred to me literally as we watched the previouslies that Jessica could have lied about her pregnancy.

I liked Rufus’s black vest and Lucy’s loose kimono sleepwear looks as everyone got up to speed and angry because of Wyatt’s bad decision making and their previous lack of knowledge about all things Living Jessica. Not done with hurting Lucy emotionally, Wyatt hit her physically by accident. Temper, temper.

Mama Preston oozed self-satisfaction and Emma’s nose got pushed out of joint, though that was terrible guarding from Rittenhouse. I’m not clear as to whether they knew about Jiya’s seizures and seeing the future.

But JIYA! She was awesome and realistically so for her skillset and not okay with killing her guard. In fact, the whole opening was so great, I didn’t mind the cheese of ‘she’s lost in time.’

I’m not sure why it had to be in the Prestons’ book logically, but of course Jiya and Rufus read Klingon, though she can’t have believed they wouldn’t come for her. (How did they miss the date? Lucy et al weren’t involved in the engineering.)

It was exciting to see that the mothership’s team was Emma, Jessica, Carol and Nicholas. But for Emma to turn on half of them – FINALLY! – well, commendable twist. And for all his self-importance, no-one bothered much about Nicholas.

Carol admitted she’d got rid of Lucy’s sister to have more time with Lucy, but still wanted her to play the role she was meant to in Rittenhouse, and dangled Lucy’s mysterious father in front of her. Lucy wasn’t having it.

Wyatt got his encounter with Jessica, and was disabused of a few notions. Even after she said she was, I wondered if she really was pregnant – the fact that the theme of the episode is family and having a child and the change in priority will cause tension between her and Emma makes me lean towards believing she is. Christopher did not have to spell it out that the team is a family to Connor for us.

Lucy made a very valid point about what Flynn would do if his family was returned to him. It sure looked like her was about to admit to Feelings for her, and at the same time, Rufus’s description of him as a creepy uncle was completely valid.

Rufus and Jiya transitioned well from big reunion to arguing. What I then proceeded to wonder was why she hadn’t spent the last three years trying to get out of Chinatown SOMEHOW. She isn’t Chinese and she’s certainly resourceful. So all the while they argued about not going without each other – until Bossy!Lucy stepped in – I was wondering that.

Emma played chief nemesis – it was clear that killing Carol and Nicholas wasn’t an impulse, she’d plotted. Wyatt couldn’t shoot pregnant!Jessica, although Flynn could – and in situations like this, why can’t even trained soldiers try maiming? If they don’t trust themselves to shoot the shooting arm, at least aim at the legs!

Jiya saved the day and undid the vision, but it felt too victorious, and the echoes of what happened to Carol remained. So, in one sense, if felt more credible that he got shot anyway.

I loved that that was what broke Lucy and turned her all murderous, even if I was thinking ‘check the bullets’ after she’d first winged Emma, who was always going to be more dangerous a fighter. But Lucy was all feeling at that point. Flynn comforting her would later echo Jiya and Connor.

Poor Jiya, poor everyone. It was about time that Lucy and Wyatt talked – they should have during the engineering section, but it would have dragged the story, and he was still harbouring illusions about Jessica, and of course it was losing Rufus that triggered the admission of love. To which, great Lucy reaction shot. Nice little moment of Flynn coming for Lucy, seeing them talking, and us knowing they’d now moved on to mourning Rufus, with whom they made up a trio Flynn was never part of.

And just as I’m processing that Carol is dead, Rufus too – who would always offer a comment on how the black guy gets killed on shows like this – enter the upgraded Lightship, and my brain screamed TEMPORAL PARADOX. Or whatever it is. How are they in the same time as each other? And Future!Lucy’s bob was cool, but that’s a hard no on Wyatt’s beard. (What is the state of their relationship and their take on the current unresolvedness?)

This episode seemed to have taken the phrase ‘go big or go home’ to heart in terms of emotional stakes. I mean, bringing Rufus back makes sense and relieves me – we might not have seen the last of Carol, even – but big things changed for several characters. Jiya is hardened, Lucy is motherless, the mother of Wyatt’s baby is his enemy and a version of his wife, and they’ve all lost Rufus. It’s all very juicy and exciting.

Agreed 100%! I loved the episode - and even if the show is canceled, I'm choosing to believe they're gonna save Rufus - but that beard was terrible.
