Agents of SHIELD 5.15 Inside Voices
The show expects me to remember the details of the show back when I was thinking of giving it up. By this point, even though a lot of this post is grumbling and snark, I’m stuck for the long-haul, even pushing Poldark to the catch-up queue. But honestly I didn’t remember that the gravitonium swallowed up not!Professor Quirrell, nor did I recall the other guy it ate up – but I did go ‘ooh, Rayna!’
I continue to maintain that Melinda May is the best one standing. I enjoyed Coulson surviving and escaping (Pasdar seems to have gone very broad with Talbot, but that worked) and Fitz wasn’t particularly annoying. But Daisy is not a great leader at the moment. She’s obviously letting her emotions drive her, and yes, everyone else would be motivated to get Coulson or any team member back, but using Robin!? It was quite satisfying to watch her get nothing in front of Robin’s mother, who was very restrained on the ‘you brought me daughter out of hiding for this!?’ because she was sad about her daughter’s withdrawal, but I’m just waiting for when they fail to deliver on their promised safety.
And Daisy antagonised Jemma. As Jemma, Yo-Yo and kind of Fitz have fallen into the ‘we are invincible’ mindset, they decided to rescue Fitz – I thought it would have been smart to cheat on the liquids, because we didn’t see her pour them out, but I’m not insane. When Simmons is in this kind of mood, she is dangerous.
May’s interaction with Robin, which I’d been calling for for the first half of the episode, was the emotional crux of the show. Robin calling her ‘mom’ in front of her mother! Ouch! And touching! After the flashback/forward of Robin’s death, we were reminded of painful times, and then we had the most tender side of May, treading the same ground as Daisy had but in a different way, and bringing Robin out of her fugue state succesfully.
Hale had got out of uniform and let her hair down to look full HYDRA, to which, whatever, as Ruby saw more and more of how dodgy what she’s up to is. She seems to have pretty memory boy on side. I’d forgotten Carl had a past with Talbot, but as I’ve admitted I’d forgotten about Carl. Talbot’s line about Coulson’s continuous deaths did not lessen the handy bonkersness of Carl electroshocking Phil back. This was possibly topped by using the alien transportation device. But desperate times call for desperate escapes…
Mack was a bit self-righteous, and he and Yo-Yo need to sort out their mutual protectiveness to find a working balance, although I think he had a point about Jemma’s trajectory.
The repeated type of interaction Deke has with Daisy is not as cute as the show thinks it is. And if all the characters find out episode by episode that he’s Fitzsimmons’ grandson, it’s going to take a while. Big reveal soon, pls.
Now they’ve added multiple-personality gravitonium to the mix…I still feel very underwhelmed by the baddies. The emotional mess the team is in is what’s keeping me involved. Please hurry through all this and bring on/back the aliens.
