shallowness: Catwoman looking at the Batsign in the Gotham City night sky (Catwoman watching Batverse films)

Gotham 4.10 Things That Go Boom

Even given Gotham’s usual standard (see last week!) I did find this berserk, but mostly enjoyable. I wasn’t sure what the point of having Professor Pyg be around was (as a subplot; he was competing with Sofia for Jim’s attention, which he’d have hated if he realised) though he was entertaining. We learned a little more about him, he fell in my respect for falling for Jim’s attempts to manipulate him. But he instigated his own escape from Arkham thank you very much.

Penguin and Sofia engaged in one-upmanship, using the Dentist (kudos to the casting director, he looked eerie), Martin and – hee! – Babs, Tabby and Selina. Sofia dropped a lot of masks, and we did avert her father having to return to clean up after her or avenge her (though yeah, seeking his approval much!?). And though it looked like Jim had got his way, effectively throwing her over his shoulder and bundling her out of Gotham via Harper and a beautifully lit train set, no, he didn’t.

Getting out of Gotham is the best thing for Martin – although he carries the threat of usurping Penguin all around him. And I did believe he could have been killed, not because I am gullible, but because of the nature of the show.

What mainly amused me was Babs – I want her and Victor to have a continuing vendetta, even if she ends up communicating with Oswald and Sofia the most. Also, she doesn’t yet know Sofia had a thing with Jim (where she throws herself at him and he’s happy to have sex but not betray the city any more. He is conveniently forgetting he invited her to start a war.)

So the underworld is gearing up for a war that’s a bit gendered. Interesting!

And I was vastly amused by Lee being The Doc, the accidental boss of the Narrows, taking advice from Ed occasionally, and outwitting Samson her own way. It was one of the more berserk developments, but it’s fun. I am underwhelmed by Lee giving Ed the Riddler back. I know it’s time for him and Penguin to face off – can’t have Sofia being his only or main nemesis – but I was bored by him.

Finally, Sofia’s coat: she went from touches of red to a full-on red coat that stood by her well as she was threatened, nearly tortured, kidnapped, nearly killed etc. It has a hint of the military about it too.
