[personal profile] shallowness
My reaction to the only film awards I'm likely to watch 'live'

Before it begins, I predict...Les Mis might do comparatively well, as they've been pushing that it's a British production. I like to think that there might be some quirky results but some of the locks are still locks.

First 12 minutes: Umbrellas! Helen Mirren's hair!! Oh, I'd see you in The Hobbit 9 Are We There Yet, Gandalf? if you were in it Stephen Fry. I think he's laying it on a bit thick 'a terrificallly terrific year'!? What is Paloma Faith even...and I think Fry will have to suck up even more to make up for that choir marching among the celebs. Clooney looks a little scared - and I don't blame him.

So many words from Fry...appropriate cut to Jennifer Garner is appropriate. 'What, are we doing French movies now?' <3 whoever cut that. Best British Film: Skyfall Oooh, that's a thank you for doing well, isn't it!? Dench's excellent shock reaction is only topped by the fact that Jeremy Renner is in the building! Interesting cut to Tom Hopper is interesting.

It's Eddie REDMAYNE (every Brit is thinking maybe he ate a beefburger). Best Original Script I have seen one out of the five and I'm not sure if Boal should be on that, because wasn't it partly based on interviews? Bafta loves QT, anyway.

For what it's worth, I thought Argo was a good film, but not a great film. It's also proof that that John Goodman gets around, no? But he's not up for Best Supporting Actor - which goes to a popular Waltz. (I haven't seen Django Unchained.)

When was Billy Connolly in The Hobbit? Never mind, he can come again to present an award. The death mask on a stick for Best (non-acting) debut doesn't go to Spike Thompson.

I also haven't seen The Life of Pi mainly due to my anti-3D prejudice
- Silver Linings Playbook is winning in terms of getting to give out awards, anyway, although not one of them was a patch on Connolly - oh, it wins Best SFX.

Best Supporting Actress was one of the locks, but she looks like she's going to puke, and...she's rambling a bit...but she won us over, although Victor Hugo is surely not her honey.

Yes, Jessica Chastain, Stephen Fry did say that. I've seen Zero Dark Thirty, and I think it should be in award contention.

Wonder if Pegg and Garner bonded over JJ Abrams stories. (Who do you want to win, indeed.) Best Adapted Screenplay goes to Russell. Hmph. I thought Argo's script was better actually, Mrs Affleck.

What woman doesn't want to be compared to Paul Scholes...niiiice montage for the Film 4 lady, though, who uses phrases like 'jolly good' in her jolly decent speech. Ben Wishaw is in the building! Surprised they didn't cut to him a lot more when Skyfall won.

Oh, Susan - best intro yet! I haven't seen Lincoln yet - hopefully it's the next film I'll go see. (But you know what, after that, I suspect it'll be Warm Bodies.)

Best non-English language film j'ai vue seulement un de ces films. Not a surprise that Amour won, though.

Ooh, I voted for Elizabeth Olsen in the Rising Star award for a brilliantly naturalistic turn in Liberal Arts - I was actually able to vote this year unlike last year. And until last year, I would have said that the best known person always wins, thus making the award somewhat redundant. (This year, I think that Riseborough is beyond this award.) Oh look, Catwoman's sidekick and the slightly in danger of being typecast Juno Temple who's shaking paper is endearing won.

Hmm, do they always juxtapose rising stars with the memorial clips?

Superman is a lot taller than young Bilbo Baggins, isn't he? I remember noticing Henry Cavill in The Count of Monte Cristo. Maybe I shouldn't admit that. I wonder if he'll be any good and have any chemistry with Amy Adams. (Can you tell I have nothing to say about the Best Documentary?) I'm glad Jessica Chastain seems to be enjoying herself.

Les Mis, or the film very much with the accent on the second e. Did they record the singing live? Well, I never. Nobody told me. Oh bless, all the thesps are being PRECIOUS. (But seriously, I thought it certainly was a powerful film.)

Are we there yet, Gandalf? (Was he making a point about best film =/= best director in these awards? As Spielberg and Hopper might agree.) Well, BAFTA thinks that the Best Director is a shocked Ben Affleck. And that second act bit was very touching. (Even if I wouldn't have voted for him.)

Best Actress (I think Lawerence will win, Cotillard should win, but am interested to see if Chastain will sneak it - oh, they've used the clip of her blow-up. I haven't seen the other two performances so I can't speak to them. And that is not to say that I don't rate Lawrence. Moreover, I thought that she owned Silver Linings Playbook.) SHOCKER. Now, let's imagine Renner going down to France to hand the award to Riva. Lucky woman.

Underdressed SJP! Suddenly everyone's wondering if Best Actor will go to someone unexpected...but no. [ETA: Clearly, I hadn't yet seen Lincoln at this point. Now I have.] The other nominees seem genuine in their applause (and Affleck has one in the bag).

Heh to DDL for taking the mick out of his Method reputation. And then being rather sweet.

Heh, heh to 'I'm Samuel L. Jackson'. As for who will win Best Film, I don't even know any more, I'm just laughing at anything amusing at this point. I would like to see pictures of Cotillard and Chastain's gowns.

Oh, BAFTA thinks Argo is the best film, then. Smart Hollywood represented and crying wives. (But my considered opinion is that they're wrong.)

The Fellowship is rarely the high point, Fry, and Spacey...is no Samuel L. Jackson. Good on Alan Parker for his career, of course, and I do appreciate what BAFTA does differently, but it's not that enthralling. Still, that was a nice self-depracating and wry speech.

Earlier awards and the people who award them always answer every 'why are they there?' you've been wondering all night. Yes, Ben Wishaw, you too should go give the make-up and hair person that award personally. Someone else can tot up the winner of the night (but it's Argo, isn't it?)
