shallowness: Catwoman looking at the Batsign in the Gotham City night sky (Catwoman watching Batverse films)

Gotham 4.20 That Old Corpse

Well, that’s a gravestone and a half (SECOND TIME IS THE CHARM!)

Ooh, is that a foretaste of Harley Queen come to crash the party of Jerome fanatics? One last plan from him, and it started out grossly with a disinterment.

Lee and Jim tried to psych each other out in a beautifully shot interview.

Quite a few visual references to Burton-era Batman with the video and the mob turning the GCPD into a siege. I also liked the circus vibe of the chief henchman throwing knives.

Not knowing that, The Eddler had a plan to rescue Lee, which seemed a bit A-team.

I thought along the same ‘Get armed’ lines as Jim.

As to Bruce’s meeting with Jeremiah, I thought the dialogue didn’t really achieve what it needed to in developing the delicate balance of trust between the bereaved, paranoid and disturbed genius and the younger, taller one. I hoped Jerome had greater plans than his coffin being used as a battering ram and assumed that he planted the visions of him clawing out of his grave in Jeremiah’s mind somehow. The actors did their best, because they knew it’s an important relationship to develop, but it was a clunky scene. The most interesting thing for the future, though, was that Jeremiah could tell when Bruce was lying to him.

Jim had a plan! It didn’t entirely work, and Lee got concussed.

I refused to believe that Selina was responsible for the sloppy break in at the Manor, so I was relieved it was henchmen

The next section veered between funny – Butch getting understandably miffed about Penguin’s delaying and general uselessness, the Eddler wanting to go to a costume shop and, I have to admit, Jim and Harvey’s approaches to interviewing a henchman in a boot via Tasering, more so than the overly optimistic criminals in the van. It was also full-on gothic tragedy as Bruce’s bright idea of taking Jeremiah to the cemetery backfired spectacularly. And he didn’t even try to phone Alfred again after Jeremiah ran. Jeremiah flipping and thinking Bruce was Jerome was effective.

Lee came to and picked her way out of the party (ooh, graffitiing the GCPD, that’s so destructive!) and returned to the morgue.

I had started wondering if the Harley figure was Echo, but admit I was still wondering how Jerome would have got to her. Video!Jerome’s whole ‘watch for the twist, it’s clever’ did turn out to be cleverish (for Gotham). So, it was Jeremiah faking it all along, and a chilling Jeremiah at that, who had pale skin (and improved eyesight!). Do we buy his claim that it wasn’t the gas? Also, I note that Bruce totally fell for it.

Jeremiah pretended to be Jerome until he got annoyed that Jerome was getting all the praise. It all doesn’t quite feel like the big twist that was promised, that it wasn't Jerome plotting for after his death, but Jeremiah all along, even though I fell for it, because we knew Jeremiah was going to be evil, it just feels like the schedule was moved up, is all.

I don’t buy Jim’s death for a second (a cockroach is the comparison I made) and it’s Gotham, you need to see the body, and threatening to shoot someone in the head is not a particularly effective threat any more, either. (I also don’t believe Alfred is more than hors de combat. Maybe Selina could find him and rescue him so that he could grudgingly thank her?)

The episode should have ended on Bruce tossed into the open grave to lie unconscious on top of Jerome. That was the visual. Some of the business that followed was fun (more torture-related giggles, oh show!) but drinking booze that had been carried around in Jerome’s coffin was gross. Echo continues to intrigue, and the image of all the ‘generators’ that Bruce had built for Jerome was striking, but not a patch on the one several scenes ago.

Still, we got Lee/Ed fun, with her having knocked him out, because she’s quite competent, but he was the one to bring the masks. Both of them were back at the GCPD for a second. The whole being into her dressing up in a clown suit and blowing the wig! More seriously, I think his ego as well as his heart was involved in the rescue attempt. He doesn’t want her wrapping him round her little finger; I don’t care, I am lapping them up in a Wes/Lilah way. I think this is a whole lot more successful than Oswald/Sofia was.
