shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Rogue X-Men Films)

...in that I prefer undemanding comedy-dramas from years gone by to heavy arty thrillers of today.

So, I said I've been watching a bit of Monarch of the Glen.

I started watching it during episode 1.7, which is a key Archie/Lexie episode, so there's my shippy compulsion, okay. Archie, the show’s protagonist, is a magnet for women, and every time your roll your eyes about it, you look at his face and go, 'oh, all right then'. Compared with Justine and Katrina at that point, Lexie’s positivity was very attractive, and she won me over entirely by going to the window to check where the train was and thus where she’d had her snog with Archie. I spoiled myself to find out what happened with them, and I’d like to see season 3 – I’m going to pretend that when she went back to New Zealand, they worked on their relationship and it was All Fine. Details on wikis are scant. I know they're no Ross and Demelza, if you want variants on the Laird and the Housekeeper.

I suspect much of what happened in the final few series was about extrinsic reasons and not intrinsic.

It’s watchable – some of the gags with Hector, Molly and Killwillie are pure farce, and it’s set in gorgeous, gorgeous Scotland. There’s a sweetness about it. It’s also fascinating to wonder how much of this influenced Julian Fellowes (playing Killwillie) when writing Downton. I've now seen early season 2 episodes.

Molly is adorable. Hector less so – Briers plays him with aplomb, but he’s mostly an awful, selfish, entitled manchild. I veer between wanting to shake Archie and worrying he’ll get an ulcer. Katrina can and should do better. Lexie can be trusted to be entertaining in at least one scene, and lovely in another. (There’s a faint association between her and Kaylee in my mind.)

I fell asleep towards while watching Black Earth Rising, after a draining day. I’d suspected I’d struggle with it because of where I was at emotionally yesterday, but thought I was more likely to watch it live, but if I want to know what happened and watch the beginning more attentively, iPlayer it is. Apparently Killing Eve is really successful on iPlayer, probably the boxset offer is appealing as well as the content.
