Blindspot 1.6

The overall story keeps developing in unexpected ways. This episode featuring Saudi princes and hacking landed differently to how it would have when it was first aired, but anyway, I was delighted when my reflect ‘it could be a she’ about the hacker was validated. For one thing, she interacted with Jane, Tasha and Patterson and increased the ‘women talking about crime’ rate, to the point that I hope she recurs. She also helped unlock another tat, and possibly others – I very much like that they’re going for the hidden tats = even more storytelling possibilities.

There were a few anvils, with the fissures in Jane and Weller’s relationship being echoed in Jane’s sympathy with Ana (and for what it’s worth, I thought that was unconsciously good interrogating. She got more out of Ana than Tash did with her agent throwing her weight around bluster) and in Patterson’s relationship with her boyfriend. I’m side-eyeing him now. Almost expecting him to be a mole or to die or to be a mole and die, or something else given a few other developments.

See, Jane had a sex dream and when discussing it with the doc, was the first to raise Kurt, and the tree tattoo could have been symbolic. So she was reappraising her relationship with Weller, and her points about needing some normal interaction were valid and sad.

But Mayflower and Weller had another of their open-ended conversations (see also tooth vs. DNA) where he said he could be objective about Jane. I snorted. Weller’s idea of ‘objective’ was then to be really cranky and picky and hurt when she didn’t take it well. Admittedly, he was under pressure from the whole paternal situation (he doesn’t come out of it well, neither does his sister, although I can see why a brickbat must seem like the only way to go.) Really, his boss should have put her foot down with Weller a couple of episodes ago.

And then, in a nice flip as the viewer got to be pretty smug about the UST of the central pairing, we saw that there was a living, breathing man with a tree tattoo on his arm watching Jane be all sad and lonely at her safehouse. So, Jane’s subconscious was remembering someone after all, and the fact that they’d killed off the guy who seemed to have been in on this scheme, which had surprised me, didn’t matter so much, because it was more than a two-person job. Again, this is not surprising, given the density of the tattoo plot.

A couple of other things, I should probably keep a running total of vehicular destruction. I realised this after the ‘previously’. A van and a lorry got it here. Jane gets at least one amnesiac plays dumb moment an episode ‘what’s the dark web?’ And Patterson seems to have forgotten Mayflower was blackmailing her, because she brought the redacted case to Weller’s attention.

There were nice little moments where we were allowed to doubt both Jane and Ana, despite feeling a huge amount of sympathy for both.

Berlin Station 1.3

I realised in the downtime that nothing can happen to the cat.

The plot stepped up with the fake dead agents agents and deputy director Moore getting Thomas Shawed. We opened up with a very accomplished dream sequence, which echoed throughout the ep, for Stephen. There were parallels between him and Daniel, who was suddenly cut off from the boss of his secret mission and scrabbling, until he got a morale-boost from his family.

Enter Claire, while Hector struggled with what they’d let happen to Faisal, but the betrayal of bugging Danny’s phone, as Danny relaxed with his friend from way back was a nice pointer to his betrayal as Thomas Shaw of them all.

Valerie’s agent played up.

I thought the grounds for believing Stephen could be up for deputy director were flimsy, but I read his reaching out to Danny as him wanting it.

Everybody being so free and easy with their secrets in the station that was being under investigation from agents from HQ struck me as epically stupid.

We saw more of Danny’s lady counterpart.

I can watch more of the credit sequence. Still hate the music and the quick cuts, but I did notice the characters mixed in with cool Berlin shots.
