TGW 4.6 The Art of War
Noticed that Josh Charles was directing this, which explained why Will ducked out (although I’d have really liked a shared moment between him and Diane where they faced the possibility of Alicia and Cary setting up a firm between them and climbing to the top of the legal pile, while they were forgotten. Or some kind of shared Mom and Pop realise the kids don’t need them anymore moment. This is where I point out that nearly everything I know about the US legal system comes from TV.)
The other thing I am missing is the kids’ reactions to all this. So Eli scotched the story, but it is kind of out there. Alicia may be sort of past caring, but I doubt that they are. I would like to see that.
Really liked the case of the week – for one thing ‘Take the compliment’ was an awesome moment, and Peet did a good job of portraying a multifaceted character. You could totally understand Alicia and the Military Judge Lady’s inner mama bears coming out. ‘No hard feelings’??? I loved the show for having his defendant, who had been pulling faces at Alicia, he was so into the case, refuse to shake the attempted rapist’s hand.
For what it’s worth, I believed Mattie more than Alicia did, but Peter’s point about her not knowing when she was lying was powerful. (I suppose I should wait to see about the truth of the story. But I have shipper blinders.) Mattie doesn’t seem to be on the same level as Peter-and-Eli, money or no, plus he’s going to enjoy coming out fighting against someone who hurt his family. And poor liddle Oedipus may have a liddle more fire in his belly because his mother has a new favourite man. Who is younger than Peter. Heh.
If they hadn’t had so many returning faces, we might have seen Owen, but it’s something that Alicia felt that she could trust Kalinda for a drink, and at least she got Kalinda to admit that the delightful Nick is dangerous. I’m still not sure that Lana’s investigation into Kalinda and Eli is work-related.
And finally Cary had a good day at the office. His face and his smarts! Nice analysis of the Trustee, nice use of his leverage and getting in there with Diane, while biding his time RE Alicia and Kalinda.
Revenge 2.09
Well, I enjoyed he opportunity for a Last of the Mohicans joke provided by the opening scene. There were bits when I thought ‘I don’t care about this’ – most especially the scene where the bad brothers had their bloody encounter with the man who killed their father. For a second, I wondered what it would be like if Jack flipped. Of course, if only the poor baby knew, if he let Amanda/Emily in on things, the problem could be sorted very quickly, let alone Emily/Amanda. Also, wow, his father was going to let him sail away to Haiti with that gun on board!?
I am starting to refer to Emily and Aiden as his and hers (due to their matching costumes). I don’t love the effect he’s having on the balance of the show. Happy couples I’m not invested in are snoozeworthy, and of course, she can’t fully commit because of her mission. I am beginning to hope he gets bumped off before the end of the season, because I can’t cope with all this.
Meanwhile, Aiden being off the board can’t be good for them.
Ugh, Ashley. I wish they hadn’t gone there. I had thought we has escaped it. I suppose thematcially, it tied into last week’s flashback (so important it supplied all of the ‘previously’), in that Ashley who thought she was better off was actually doing what she was spared from doing when Emily first met her.
The actor playing Daniel made an interesting choice in trying to out-rasp Gabriel Mann. (Dude, no.) I am curious about Nolan’s plan and if he’ll need Emily to extricate him from it.
I am still amused/entertained by Victoria and Conrad, occasional drinking buddies. ‘SLAP!’, ‘What’s that for?’. ‘Take your pick.’ The Initiative is a very handy scapegoat, but at some point Emily Thorne’s going to come on their radar, isn’t she? The Initiative’s, I mean.
Heh, Victoria is back to thinking Emily is better than Ashley. Daniel is wondering, sadly, why all his girlfriends cheat on him, as he metamorphoses into his dad.
