shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Wanda Infinity War)

Agents of SHIELD 6.4 Code Yellow

I lowered my expectations as this was an Earthbound ep, and it only occasionally exceeded them. I was glad to see Deke, but less glad to see spruced up!Deke, and the whole Framework opening was lamer than it was meant to be as a send up of Deke’s fantasies. Clearly, the boy’s watched 80s and 90s action movies and learned nothing about the creation of the Framework. The best thing about his start-up was the lemons everywhere – I’d toyed with writing a fic about Deke working at a lemon grove, showing I have less ambition for him. But the satire about the influencer/girlfriend, young blades and their tech companies and idealism and all wasn’t exactly tangy.

Still, I didn’t want him dead.

We learned a little more about not!Coulson and gang. They seem to be hunters as much as the ones from the previous episode, just more destructive and with less cool means of travel. If they are, there is an irony in their going after aliens and humans from different timelines depending on what not!Coulson is. Depending on whether the Coulson we knew was Coulson prime, of course.

Are they going to go after Peter MacNiccol’s Asgardian then?

But that does add interest to what’s happened to Fitz, so kudos on the tying of the various strands together.

I still didn’t care much about Yo-Yo/New Guy, I thought he should have fought harder for them, not argued Mack’s case, and if the show doesn’t remember that there were legitimate issues between Mack and Yo-Yo after everything, I’ll seethe. As it was, I rolled my eyes about SHIELD apparently having rules about fraternisation now, for unless if it’s a thing Mack introduced after all the coupling off, it’s absurd.

But New Guy was doomed. I would be more struck by the tragedy of Yo-Yo having to kill her new love if there hadn’t been two instances where she could have deployed her superspeed and saved him.

I am not impressed with the new scientist. He clearly hasn’t been reading up if he didn’t know she was an Inhuman, and one felt Simmons would have done better on the autopsy/alien parasite front. Possibly unfairly.

Ah well, there was May. Fierce against Snowflake, and Ming-Na Wen carried all the close-ups of her turmoil at being captured by the man with her love’s face. Aggravating that they held off from any real encounter between them, though.

I had been wondering if SHIELD was that incompetent that it let Deke rip them and the future off unchecked, so I was relieved that Deke’s wingman turned out to be an agent, but they sort of ruined that at the end with the clips from Sequoia’s phone, which were less funny than they thought, and the bit at the end was lame.

So, Not!Coulson and Snow have May, while SHIELD has the other two. And Deke…Okay, then.
