I kept wanting to call it 'PDF'

Berlin Station 2.7 Right and Wrong
April learned spying was complicated. The baseline was her feelings about Gerhardt. Hector continued helping Lena, who was still rage-y and impatient and self-destructive, though the question of whether she (or he) would go through with it was always present in their scenes. Stephen impressed by turning up at Ambassador Dog Lover’s residence and asking reasonable questions about what lay behind funding the PfD. Danny and Esther negotiated their relationship, mainly the professional one, with him having no clue where Hector and especially Lena were at as he negotiated for them.
And the clock ticked down ever more.
So, April defaulted to observing/gathering intel instead of reporting what she’d (illegally) learned, and saw Hector buy a swish weapon (with what money?) Valerie did some initial spying, settling in for the long haul, while Stephen learned that his country was bypassing its own intrusive enough agencies for security and business reasons and willing to do so along with Gerhardt, who Stephen rightly pointed out was unreliable (which is a polite way of putting it). Ambassador In With The Current Administration tried to pretend that Stephen could be the arbitrer of the treasure trove/minefield. Ha. As if. But will his love of the work and ego drown out the fact that he has to know that?
Adding to the ripped from-the-headlines feel was the level of ‘would you kill baby Hitler?’ debate. To which the answer is ‘I don’t think he was a baby in 1933, so I wouldn’t be hopping onto any time travelling machine you were piloting, kids.’ Daniel and April got up to speed and heard about Robert’s survive-to-live another-day position for the station. She couldn’t tell them what she knew. Interesting gendered aspect to that, remembering BB’s request to Valerie to look out for April. She turned to Valerie for advice. But of course, Valerie was investigating the mysterious doings of her paramour and not picking up her calls.
The decision got taken out of April’s hands by the Germans, a bit. Also Lena’s inability to follow orders. Hector…doesn’t mind hitting German officers, and even if he’s as anti PfD as you, Esther, Stefan the agent has got outsmarted one too many times. Stop sending him into the field/where there are Americans. Danny, who trusts people, had his trust shattered in smithereens. Given the likely election results, its effect on her job and her personal life going down in flames, Esther is not winning right now. Except on wardrobe choices.
Another effective use of the location for a thrilling scene at the station.
Cue mutual hostility from Lena and April. April dropped the news of who was funding Gerhardt on Hector and Lena (who stropped off to do things her own way – surprising we didn’t have an ensuing scene of her getting caught and/or killed, then). At this point, I thought neither Hector nor April had made up their minds what to do.
Noah was on to a moody Robert lying to him. FAMILY DRAMA! Turned out maybe Esther/Danny weren’t over, although I think Daniel is underestimating his willingness to trust people. Of course Stephen is taking the job because he thinks better him than anyone else. E-G-O.
Valerie’s advice to April (repeating the word ‘aribtrer’, but rejecting it, unlike Stephen, by implication) about the greyness of what they dealt with made her change her mind. But Hector is his own man, and had switched off his (bugged) phone, understandably enough. After the crowds, the balloons and the firework, a good choice just to go to a black screen and give us the sound of the bullet being fired.
(I’d been spoiled for Gerhardt actually being assassinated.)
I forgot to watch Summer of Rockets last night, but I was watching the Veronica Mars movie on DVD. The feature about how the fans helped make the movie is one of the most joyous making the movie featurettes I’ve ever seen.
