A Verdon/Fosse episode for once

Fosse/Verdon - 1.7 Nowadays
Gwen (and Michelle Williams thusly) got a fantasy sequence of her own, with the contrast of being able to sing out between Gwen’s no-longer-there voice, even before she got blisters on her cords (from confetti?) This was mainly about the conception of Nicole (who then, like everything else, came a distant second to her parents’ arguments in the main timeline) and Chicago, which definitely had a geriatric mother, stormy genesis and babyhood. And problems ensued.
We were invited to ponder how having china thrown at you for cheating was the obvious inspiration to propose, and how the charm of that would make one think, ‘Yes, this is a good basis for starting a family.’
There was lots about Fosse dealing with her being the star, then and now, but also that her star had faded, much as everyone was nervous around Fosse post-heart attack. Well, not Gwen. Not sure if the nadir was them whispering over Nicole’s recitation, Bobby asking a dancer to get him the drugs that no-one else would and then insinuating himself into staying the night (while Annie was Nicole-sitting) or how Gwen had the ‘I kept you alive so I get to have my final song’ fight in front of Chicago’s creative team. Based on my memory of the film, I wasn’t surprised that he won ultimately and there was a duet at the end of the show.
It was touching to see her stretch and try so hard and fail to keep up – the fact that the doctor was raising her age when she and Bobby were trying for Nicole made me rethink everything I’d assumed about character ages. The title cards are pointed, but not always helpful with basics.
Oh, the moment where Bobby wondered if the child was his was pretty awful too – it said a lot about him and his fidelity issues, as well as his self-esteem. Having said that, one had wondered, except it seemed to be one of those trying for adoption, natural conception happens after you’ve given up scenarios. And everyone claimed the baby looked like him.
Interesting to watch a musical I know more about than any of the previous ones they’ve shows coming together.
Autumn is coming: (i) I just put a jumper on (ii) I have a mental countdown to the first Strictly show of the year running.
