shallowness: Jadzia smiling eyes closed text reads 'Hee!' (DS9 Jadzia is amused)
[personal profile] shallowness
I’ve been watching the first disc of the show on DVD, and though it’s properly funny, it’s not as funny or touching as seasons past. The word that came to mind was ‘frenzied’. They seemed to be spending less time at Greendale (boo), and having characters lampshade this was salt to the wound, especially given the lack of continuity between episodes 2 and 4.

Abed starting a frat was something that was just counted worthy of being a passing joke in season 1. Britta was a bit one-note (the worst therapist, the worst photographer) and her relationship with Troy still isn’t working for me. Worse still was the situation with Pierce, who the show, and thus the characters, seemed to properly hate by now because he’s so racist and offensive, begging the question of why not cut him loose already?

Despite the bad taste, I dug ‘Alternate History of the German Invasion’. I’m not sure I bought its ‘we are the Nazis’ realisation, but I loved the reveal of all the times the Greendale Seven had occupied the study room and beeng a nuisance for everyone else – with some of those times being callbacks to past episodes and others being made-up randomness.

Still, in all this, Glover and Brie’s comic timing shone e.g. Annie and Troy playing good cop/bad cop and McHale got to act as the show went after Jeff’s daddy issues, (when I want it to go after Jeff/Annie). Chang’s ‘Changnesia’ plotline was glacial, ‘Advanced Documentary Making’ was the best of this bunch. I want more stuff like Physical Education Education in the second half of the series.
